COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City's Council of Community Accessibility is expanding its second-year Snow Buddies program to help elderly residents clear snowy driveways; IU students & community helpers have formed 11 volunteer pairs with 27 volunteers on standby and expect the total to exceed last winter's 15 households.  Indiana Daily Student

CULTURE NEWS

  • IU alumnus and Carnegie Mellon professor Callum Smart led the University Orchestra without a conductor Friday night at Auer Hall. They performed seven pieces including Theme and Variations, which won a competition on Jan. 14 at Ford-Crawford Hall and offered a unique learning experience in collaboration.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Constellation Stage & Screen presents Séance: The Board Awakens at the Waldron Arts Center— a live production blending magic, acting and storytelling by Rob Zabrecky and Chad Rabinovitz that features interactive séances and runs until Feb. 15.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington is celebrating Black History Month’s 100th anniversary with events hosted by IU’s Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center and the city; the school hosts a Legacy Luncheon today at 1 p.m.—and the City of Bloomington’s free kickoff is set for Feb. 7 at City Hall Council Chambers.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rogers Street between Clear Creek Drive and That Road will be closed for sewer work from Monday, Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 6+ drivers will face lane restrictions on Knightridge Road near Ind. 446 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and vehicles over 16,000 pounds require waivers from Feb. 3.  The Herald-Times

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The B Square is now reporting new Monroe County property transfers from Jan. 12 to Jan. 28, drawn from Beacon (the county’s online GIS system). The report lists multiple transactions with sale prices ranging from $0 to over $1 million.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nick Dorn of Indiana basketball shared his thoughts after the team’s double overtime win against UCLA on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Bloomington. He explained his view of the game during a post-game interview.  The Herald-Times
  • On Jan. 30, Indiana swim and dive teams defeated Louisville at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington. The women’s team scored 161-138 with top finishes in key races while the men’s team earned a 216-84 win with standout performances in the finals.  Indiana Daily Student
  • At the sectional tournament on Jan. 31, Bloomington South’s junior Denny Allgood won the 175-pound title with a 13-4 decision over Noah Fields. His school claimed eight titles — several first-time winners advanced to regionals.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana basketball beat UCLA in a double overtime game Saturday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion, as freshman Trent Sisley hit a final free throw with 0.3 seconds left to secure the Hoosiers’ third win.  The Herald-Times
