COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local volunteer opportunities are open through the Bloomington Volunteer Network, with ongoing 40 Days of Peace projects and a tax service shift at the Ellettsville site. A volunteer role to help with the Boys & Girls Clubs donor luncheon is set for Feb. 13 at Lincoln Street Club.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bloomington kicked off Black History Month celebrations on Feb. 7 at city hall with dance, poetry and choral performances, drawing 300+ community members. Upcoming events include a Black Market on Feb. 14, a poster contest on Feb. 21, and a gala at Woolery Mill on Feb. 28.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana Newsroom will launch this fall at IU Media School using a $300K grant from the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County to expand local coverage on underreported issues and offer paid, hands-on training to up to 15 student reporters per semester — partnering with local news organizations.  Indiana University
  • Indiana University’s new Capital Campus in Washington (Dupont Circle) will expand student opportunities with classrooms, event spaces and on-site housing that reduce transit burdens and foster community. The facility builds on over four decades of public affairs internships, offering a fresh hub that merges theory with practical experience.  Indiana University
  • Indiana University will launch the new Jacobs Dance department next school year by merging its ballet and contemporary dance programs — giving students a choice of degree tracks. Current ballet and dance faculty will join, and theater and drama merger talks continue.  Indiana Daily Student

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Former White House climate advisor Gina McCarthy and former EPA deputy Janet McCabe discussed local climate action during a talk at Indiana University on Feb. 5, stressing that mayors and community officials must lead on climate policy while federal efforts lag — a call for local leadership amid extreme weather.  The Bloomingtonian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bloomington restored fluoride in its tap water using a temporary modular system after six years without consistent levels caused by erosion issues, according to a Monday announcement. Officials acknowledged past reporting gaps and said they will hold annual public meetings on water quality.  The Herald-Times

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Bloomington’s plan commission voted Monday night to recommend rezoning 6.3 acres for the Hopewell South PUD, which would support nearly 100 small, affordable homes and require enhanced accessibility oversight — the proposal will next be reviewed by city council.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana men’s basketball player Lamar Wilkerson was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday after scoring 58 points in two games last week for his team. He shared the award with Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz as his play helped secure a close overtime win.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington readers can vote in the IU Health Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll covering Feb. 2-7, featuring nominees from local schools including Bloomington South and Eastern Greene. The poll will close Thursday, Feb. 12 at noon.  The Herald-Times
  • Lamar Wilkerson scored 41 points to lead Indiana to a 92-74 win over Oregon at Assembly Hall on Monday night. The Hoosiers turned a tight early game into a strong second half to secure their fourth win in five games.  The Herald-Times
