COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hoosier Hills Food Bank announced that it will lose 62,000 pounds of food after USDA canceled shipments from the Emergency Food Assistance Program and will miss eight food deliveries from March to July—raising concerns as the bank, which serves over 50,000 people a month, faces growing demand amid federal cuts.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Food Truck Fridays opened the 2025 season on Friday at Switchyard Park where vendors and local families gathered for a free event in chilly weather. The event showcased a variety of foods—Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee, Wever’s Smoke Eaters BBQ, and Arepa Burger—and offered a family-friendly atmosphere for those in the community.  Indiana Daily Student

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jewish Theatre of Bloomington will show Amy Herzog's award-winning play 4000 Miles this May at Waldron Rose Firebay—performances will be on May 8, 10, 15, 17 and a matinee on May 18. Director Bill Simmons leads the play, which stars Martha Jacobs and Ryan Eller and tells a story about family loss and strength.  The Bloomingtonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Between 2021 and 2024, Monroe County students using Indiana Choice vouchers for private schools increased from 373 to 700—most of the growth coming from the local school corporation—while charter school enrollment edged up from 804 to 842; local education officials warn that rising private enrollment may further strain public school funds as overall enrollments fall.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun signed an executive order on April 14th to remove tax penalties that disadvantage married couples by directing state agencies to review laws and policies. The Department of Revenue will submit its report by July 1 (tax policies) and other agencies will report on benefit programs by July 1, 2026 (benefit programs).  WTHR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA recalled various soup and bowl products—items from Campbell's, Molly's Kitchen, and Sysco—after tests found wood in cilantro, and products in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio were affected by the recall issued on April 11. Further products may be added as the investigation continues.  The Herald-Times

  • On April 13, Bill Armstrong Stadium hosted the Little 500 Spring Series Team Pursuit race where teams of four riders raced 15 laps starting 20 feet from their bikes—Alpha Chi Omega won the women’s race and the Cutters won the men’s.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Former Indiana women’s basketball player Lilly Meister committed to Kansas Monday — she played in 63 games in her two seasons with the Hoosiers and started 17 games this season while averaging 6.7 points and 3.5 rebounds.  The Herald-Times
