COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bloomingfoods Co-op Market will host its annual EarthFest from Tuesday, April 22 through Saturday, May 10—an event offering a vintage clothing pop-up, environmental education, and bulk discounts for customers using reusable containers. The celebration will also include community events such as a tree giveaway on April 26, film screening on May 2, farm tour on May 3, and a plant sale on Fair Trade Day, May 10.  The Bloomingtonian

CULTURE NEWS

  • The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center held its 12th Traditional Powwow on April 12 at Wilkinson Hall and brought local Native communities together with drum performances, dances and traditional food. The event returned after last year's cancelation due to venue issues—people were excited to join a day of heritage and community connection.  Indiana Daily Student
  • IU's NAGPRA office finished repatriating four Native American remains and cultural items after a ProPublica investigation showed the university had one of the largest unrepatriated collections—officials work with tribal nations to return these items under federal law.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 10, over 300 graduate workers, staff, faculty and community members protested IU’s visa revocations to demand secure pathways to degrees. IU administration met with IGWC and student leaders and agreed to protect affected students by not unenrolling them when their visas are revoked + by checking records daily to promptly reach out to those impacted.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Indiana University runs Outdoor Adventures courses that teach students outdoor skills such as rock climbing and mountain biking—with courses usually worth one to two credits and a fee of $175.44 that covers gear, food, and travel. Students meet for two weeks before trips where they learn basic skills and build teamwork to help them face challenges outdoors.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ACLU of Indiana filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security Tuesday - arguing it wrongly ended the F-1 student status for seven international students on April 3, which risks their deportation without due process. The lawsuit asks for immediate court review to grant temporary protection for the students.  The Herald-Times
  • At its Wednesday meeting, Bloomington's city council approved $795,743 in Community Development Block Grant funds for 2025, with 65% allocated to physical improvements, 15% to social services + 20% to administration. A citizens advisory committee scored applications to support projects such as free meal programs, after-school initiatives and neighborhood infrastructure upgrades.  The B Square Bulletin
  • The City of Bloomington, Monroe County, Ellettsville and Stinesville secured more than $3.7 million from state and federal sources to improve road safety and essential infrastructure. The grants—awarded through competitive programs—will fund projects such as ADA curb ramp upgrades, safety improvements on high-risk curves, and paving across Monroe County.  City of Bloomington
  • An Indiana amendment to Senate Bill 197 would make it a misdemeanor to sleep on public property if a person does not leave after a police warning and is now headed to a conference committee after passing the House while the Senate dissented Tuesday. 19-year-old Dakota, who has already suffered frostbite from sleeping on the sidewalk as local encampments were cleared, said she will hitchhike west—leaving few shelter options available.  Indiana Daily Student

  • Indiana men’s basketball added former Troy guard Tayton Conerway on Wednesday after he won Sun Belt Player of the Year honors in the 2024-25 season—he has one season left to play. He joins other transfers as Coach Darian Devries builds the team’s backcourt.  Indiana Daily Student
