CULTURE NEWS

  • OT 987 is a light sculpture made by Berlin-based artist Stefan Reiss that now lights up the edge of Bloomington’s Trades District at 10th and Madison streets after six years of planning. The work was funded by the city’s One Percent for the Arts ordinance — the first in a series of planned public artworks to add creative energy to the area.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe Fire Protection District is facing a volunteer firefighter shortage that has made it tougher and more expensive to recruit and train new firefighters—many young volunteers leave after gaining enough hours for a career fire service job. This trend reflects a statewide challenge as rural areas rely heavily on unpaid first responders.  Indiana Daily Student
  • The City Council unanimously approved recommendations Wednesday to distribute Community Development Block Grant funds for 2025 totaling around $795,743 that must use at least 70% for low-to-moderate-income programs. Local organizations—such as the Boys and Girls Club and Community Kitchen—will receive funding for social services, physical improvements and administration next fiscal year.  Indiana Daily Student
  • On April 17, Duke Energy held a field hearing at the Bloomington Convention Center to discuss its proposed rate increase to fund two new natural gas power plants that may raise customer bills by about 5.4% over five years. Monroe County commissioners later held a final vote on downzoning over 200 parcels in areas the city tried to annex—actions that will guide future local development.  The B Square Bulletin

  • Former Indiana football coach Lee Corso will retire as an ESPN College GameDay analyst after nearly 40 years—his final appearance is scheduled for Aug. 30. He coached the Hoosiers from 1973 to 1982.  The Herald-Times
