BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local businesses in Bloomington are getting ready for Little 500 weekend, with the women’s race on April 25 and the men’s race on April 26 promising more visitors. Restaurants like the Village Deli will offer outdoor seating because Kirkwood Avenue is closed to vehicles—shops such as Greetings on Kirkwood will add extra staff to meet the demand.  Indiana Daily Student

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bloomington Expressive Arts Training holds its 13th annual Spring Show today at Buskirk-Chumley Theater with 77 young singers and dancers performing routines from its competition groups—Syncopation, Amplitude, Mini Sync and DanceWERKS under the theme One Heart BEAT.  Indiana Daily Student
  • IU graduate and saxophonist Peyton Womock landed a gig playing the National Anthem at a sold-out Pacers game on March 26th at Gainbridge Fieldhouse by cold-calling the organizers—he built his career using self-marketing and unique performance skills.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • IU’s Arabic Flagship Program at Hamilton Lugar School gives students a chance to learn Arabic, work with tutors and even study abroad in Meknes, Morocco—helping them explore Arab traditions during Arab American Heritage Month. The program will end with a closing ceremony in May—where students share poetry, music and dancing to celebrate Arab culture.  Indiana Daily Student
  • The IU Student Foundation supports student causes on campus by planning the Little 500 and running the Students Helping Students campaign that funds projects like the new Wellness House. Students volunteer on committees to build leadership skills and care for their campus community—showing a strong commitment to one another.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County government is moving its website to a new host and will change its web address from co.monroe.in.us to monroecounty.in.gov after a CAPTCHA test caused issues for some users. County officials approved the move on April 17 and the migration will cost $9,000 for moving content and $3,000 for hosting (12,000 HTML files have been trimmed to 1,500).  The B Square Bulletin
  • Monroe County commissioners postponed renewing a contract with B&L IT Services for election support services through 2026 because the storage lease for election equipment was proposed in the vendor's name instead of the county's. They will reexamine the agreement at their next meeting on May 1.  The B Square Bulletin

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Indiana Vintage Market held its first event in Bloomington Saturday at Monroe Convention Center—vendors sold vintage clothing, jewelry, toys and art prints from across the Midwest. The event grew busy after an early quiet session and featured mystery bags and special finds from local and regional sellers.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Howard S. "Howdy" Wilcox, a World War II veteran and IU Foundation president, came up with the idea for the legendary Little 500 bike race when he saw an informal race on campus in the fall of 1950—an idea that raised money for scholarships and created a lasting local tradition.
