Good morning, Bloomington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of April.
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Myanmar Student Association partnered with local groups to host their annual Burmese New Year Water Festival at the Indiana Memorial Union on Saturday—moved indoors because of bad weather. The festival celebrated Burmese culture with water splashing, traditional performances and a fundraiser to support relief efforts after the recent earthquake and ongoing political hardships in Myanmar. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Trustee Vivian Winston was the only vote against IU President Whitten’s contract extension at the February board meeting, arguing that the decision was rushed without proper notice or an independent review (she called for more input from faculty, staff, and students to rebuild shared governance). Her dissent follows a prior no-confidence vote by faculty, which she believes highlights ongoing communication issues between the board and the Bloomington campus. Indiana Daily Student
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ In early February, the Indiana Daily Student obtained IU investment documents that show snapshots from 2022 and 2023, including Israel bonds with a 2.75% interest rate due in 2030, but the records do not reveal purchase costs or amounts. IU did not answer further queries + the IDS awaits additional records to confirm the details. Indiana Daily Student
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the city’s redevelopment commission spent up to $100,000 for due diligence at 216 S. College Avenue—once used as a fire station—to check if the site can support a hotel for the Convention Center expansion. Developer reps said they will complete site investigations in 30 to 60 days, and the hotel project is expected to follow the January 2027 opening of the expanded center. The B Square Bulletin
