CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Bloomington will host Little 500 races at Bill Armstrong Stadium, environmental talks and hikes at IU and State Park, a music expo at Switchyard Park Pavilion, West Coast Swing at Windfall Dancers, and an IU Soul Revue concert at Buskirk-Chumley Theater.   • Yesterday, the Earth Connection Film Festival showcased 17 nature films at IU Cinema as part of Earth Day events. Directors Jessica Eise (a researcher at IU) and Sarah Lasley hosted a panel after screenings that connected personal stories to climate change and spurred community engagement.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bridges MAYO Orchestra joined local youth theater groups on Tuesday for 'Mooch the Magnificent,' an opera designed for a child ensemble after six hours of practice.   • IU Cinema in Bloomington celebrated Crash’s 30th-anniversary screening on Tuesday with a special event focusing on the film’s exploration of isolation and human connection - about 50 local attendees joined to watch Cronenberg's provocative film based on J.G. ECONOMY NEWS

  • At an economic summit held Friday, April 17 on campus, local experts noted that Bloomington and Monroe County have the talent and drive to boost job growth and local businesses — a sign that community collaboration can help the region thrive.  The Herald-Times

  • Indiana University removed Showalter Fountain's bronze fish in January for maintenance, and they will return by the end of the semester, leaving graduating students disappointed as they plan their final photos at this campus landmark (a favorite spot).  Indiana Daily Student

  • Today, the IU Environmental Resilience Institute named Ellen Ketterson, its founding director and evolutionary biologist, one of 12 Hoosier Resilience Heroes for her work on bird conservation and climate research.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Softball star Avery Parker broke her home run record with her 46th homer in a 14-1 win over Valparaiso at Andy Mohr Field in Bloomington on Wednesday — she led her team. Parker will seek to extend her record in a three-game series vs Michigan starting Friday at 6 p.m.  Indiana Daily Student
  • The USA TODAY Store offers exclusive Fernando Mendoza framed prints at up to 20% off to celebrate his national championship season ahead of the NFL draft today in Pittsburgh. Fans can shop these prints until Monday, April 27 as Mendoza is expected to be the first overall pick.  The Herald-Times
  • Former USC guard Malia Samuels, who averaged 3.4 points & 2.6 rebounds last season, joined Indiana women’s basketball on Wednesday. Her transfer adds to team changes following the departure of six players to the transfer portal.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington South will join the Hoosier Hills Conference as the eighth member starting in the 2027 to 2028 school year after its athletic director JR Holmes presented a detailed proposal. The Panthers expect a smoother football schedule & continued competitive excellence as rivalry games remain a priority.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington North baseball won its sixth game in a row on Tuesday, April 21 when Liam Smith's RBI walk off double gave a 4-3 win at home. Coach Hurt said solid pitching + teamwork set the stage for Saturday's game.  The Herald-Times
