- ➤ The Youth Services Bureau and Building a Thriving Compassionate Community are gearing up for the 10th Annual Monroe County Childhood Conditions Summit on November 13 at the Monroe Convention Center—where local leaders, educators, and youth workers will share ideas to strengthen support for our youth. - ➤ Bloomington residents attended the grand opening of Hopewell Commons on Wednesday afternoon at South Morton and West Second Street where food trucks, live music and games set a festive tone. The new park features 126 trees, table tennis tables, temporary pickleball courts, a performance stage, lawn and public art and will host the Tuesday farmers' market starting in June (part of a larger Hopewell neighborhood redevelopment project aimed at bringing affordable housing and community growth). - ➤ Bloomington will host a busy weekend of events with a Little 500-themed happy hour at the Orbit Room starting Friday at 5 p.m. and an IU Soul Revue Spring Concert at Buskirk-Chumley Theater on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. along with a free Children’s Expo at Switchyard Park, Independent Bookstore Day festivities at Morgenstern Books, and guided wildflower hikes by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources across Monroe & Brown counties. - ➤ Monroe County Community School Corporation reported a projected $17 million loss in state funding from the recent state law and said it will cut staffing over the next three years—measures include pausing hiring and reviewing services to protect classroom instruction. - ➤ The City of Bloomington will honor outstanding volunteers at the 2025 Be More Awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The awards will recognize service across eight local categories—each honoree will receive a $1,000 donation for their chosen nonprofit. City of Bloomington
- ➤ Bloomington mayor Kerry Thomson said Senate Bill 1 will cut property tax revenue and force the city to raise local income taxes to cover the shortfall. - ➤ Indiana University's Little 500 has seen a record 36 women's teams register and 33 teams will race tomorrow, with the 100-lap race — half the distance of the men's event — marking a historic milestone in female competition. - ➤ Last year’s Little 500 saw Black Key Bulls win the men’s race by three seconds after a tough battle with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta, while Kappa Alpha Theta claimed the women’s title by finishing 34 seconds ahead of second place—marking its first win since 2018. In 2025, Black Key Bulls will return half of its lineup with riders Will Wagner and Wiley Close, and the women’s and men’s races are scheduled for April 25 at 4 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m. respectively.
