Good morning, Bloomington. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 3rd of May.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Bloomington Animal Care and Control only has two open kennels and is calling on residents to adopt or foster pets because the shelter is full. Staff say summer usually brings more animals and that incentives—like lower fees and special events—help encourage community members to care for them. WRTV
- ➤ On Thursday night, Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti spoke at the Boys & Girls Clubs fundraiser in Bloomington, where nearly 400 people attended and the event aimed to raise up to $200k to support youth programs. He shared leadership lessons learned from his mentors and called for consistent rules in collegiate athletics — noting that finishing what is started is essential — while addressing challenges with name, image, and likeness deals. The Herald-Times
- ➤ Indiana University launched the CoDesign Commons in a 5000 square foot space at Endwright East Active Living Community Center to let older adults co-design research and public services. The new initiative—part of IU’s Aging Research Network—has spurred projects with Dementia Friendly Bloomington, Luddy School students and local artists and will expand its design teams over the coming year. Indiana University
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Attorney Michelle Simpson Tuegel said former IU basketball players suing the university remain disappointed after an 874-page report found that ex-team doctor Brad Bomba Sr’s rectal exams were clinically appropriate — she argues a jury in Indiana should decide if IU knew the touching happened. WTHR
- ➤ Three ICE detainees from Bloomington—Jose Gomez-Iras, Neville Mayorga Rosales and Manuel Sente-Tevelan—were booked into Hopkins County Jail in Kentucky on April 30 and are being held as officials review their immigration status. Indiana Daily Student
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Bloomington-based artist and entrepreneur Nicholas Hall creates mixed media paintings and recycled necktie pocket squares called Pockties while hosting monthly house concerts at his Bryan Park mid-century ranch home and renting a high-rated studio on Airbnb. He also founded Graham’s Foundation to support parents of premature babies —an effort that has helped 175,000 families—. The Herald-Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Over 260 IU Bloomington faculty and staff signed a letter on Friday urging Provost Shrivastav to reverse the termination of tenured Luddy School professor Xiaofeng Wang, who was fired without the required notice during the week the FBI searched his and his wife’s homes on March 28. The letter also asked that the Faculty Board of Review hear his case—faculty groups claim due process was not followed. Indiana Daily Student
- ➤ Bloomington South High School won the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM competition with a $100,000 prize and a $25,000 Rising Entrepreneurship Award. The eight students worked for six months to develop Stormshield—a headband that helps hearing aid users join sports—and presented their idea in Washington, D.C. last week. WRTV
