CRIME NEWS

  • On May 4th, a 38-year-old Bloomington man was taken to a hospital for emergency surgery after he was stabbed outside The Office Lounge at 3900 E Third Street, and police arrested 49-year-old Danny J. Mathis—witnesses differ on whether the incident started with a shoulder grab or a punch—officers recovered a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Police recovered a stolen vehicle near Bob Evans on May 4 after a Bloomington woman left her infant inside while she went to get a money order and are now searching for the suspect—described as a white male in his early 20s with shaggy brown hair, a light blue sweater, an orange hoodie and a purple drawstring bag—who fled on foot.  The Bloomingtonian

CULTURE NEWS

  • IU Bloomington campus features many sculptures and statues crafted by IU professors and local artists that honor figures such as Herman B Wells, Hoagy Carmichael, and Elinor Ostrom — each with its own local tradition or interesting backstory like the hand-shake for exam luck. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers drove cars with heat sensors to gather data for an urban heat island map of Bloomington—showing spots with temperature gaps of over 12 degrees. City officials will use the map to guide actions like tree planting and air conditioner distribution to reduce extreme heat exposure.  Indiana Daily Student

  • Bloomington has many choices for a fun day out including Switchyard Park with food truck events, the Farmstop Collective with fresh food (open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 902 W. Kirkwood Ave.), and the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater for films and live shows. Visitors can also hike or boat at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve and dine on authentic Indian dishes at Amrit India on 124 N. Walnut St.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana softball finished its regular season with a series win over Purdue at Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette—they won an extra-inning game Friday, split Saturday's doubleheader and secured a 10 to 2 run-rule win to finish with a 32 to 17 overall record and 10 to 12 conference mark. They will begin Big Ten Tournament play Wednesday when they face the Washington Huskies at 1:30 p.m.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana softball's pitching staff brightened its performance over the weekend against Purdue by surrendering only seven runs in three games at Bittinger Stadium. Senior pitcher Brianna Copeland recorded a strong complete game — and the team will face Washington at 1:30 p.m. in the Big Ten Tournament.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Former Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson may return to NBA action as the Sacramento Kings consider him for the lead assistant coach role. He spent four years at Indiana and brings extensive head coaching experience—having worked with six NBA teams.  The Herald-Times
