- ➤ Artist Dailyn Eades painted a new mural on a traffic signal cabinet at 4th and Walnut on Thursday afternoon, featuring a black swallowtail butterfly sipping nectar as part of a project sanctioned by the city economic and sustainability department and Downtown Bloomington, Inc. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ IU student Margaret Ferguson, who worked as a hairdresser until a muscle disorder ended her career, founded Beyond the Chair to help beauty professionals with better education and job options—with funding from IU and help from its nonprofit management program. Her survey with cosmetologist Leah Miller showed many stylists want more training, and she later graduated and applied for a Master of Public Affairs to expand her work. Indiana University

- ➤ The City of Bloomington invites residents to apply for the free 2025 Residents Academy, which will run each Thursday from August 14 through October 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. The program offers interactive presentations and tours of city facilities (including Switchyard Park, a ride on the aerial ladder truck, and a visit to the historic Near West Side), and applications are due by July 7 with notifications by July 15. - ➤ Eastern Greene has chosen Shawn Nikirk, a former Stars All-State receiver and longtime assistant coach, as its new head football coach; the 49-year-old bank employee and father of three returns to coaching after a four-year break. Training will begin on June 12 after school ends May 16—he plans to lead a balanced offense and defense to build on past team success. The Herald-Times
- ➤ Bloomington North and South held their annual track meet at South on May 7 where athletes competed in various track and field events—video highlights capture the action and energy of the competition. The Herald-Times
- ➤ Ellie Kuespert, an IU junior who joined the women’s club hockey team in February 2024, trained all summer with support from teammates and coach Dillon Frechen to build her skills. The team, made official in 2020, earned wins on February 21 and 22 and now seeks more exposure and an on-campus rink with 500 seats needed for a Division I team — its efforts aim to give all players a better chance to shine.
