COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Bloomington announced a series of downtown activation events running monthly through November 2026. The programs will feature restaurant promotions, family night on Kirkwood on May 13 and extended shop hours on May 20 — designed to bring residents and visitors together downtown.  City of Bloomington
  • Butler Winery will host Wine & Wildlife, an all-ages fundraiser for WildCare at 6200 E. Robinson Road on Saturday, June 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event features wine tasting, animal ambassadors, a silent auction, live music, food trucks, and crafts, and it will take place rain or shine.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Bloomington Volunteer Network is offering volunteer roles today. Monroe County NOW seeks board members, CASA needs advocates for children in court, MCCT asks for help with a theater set for Shakespeare in the Park, and New Hope for Families is collecting essential in-kind donations (e.g., linens on S. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, families gathered in South Florida to honor the 110 victims of ValuJet Flight 592’s crash on May 11, 1996, including 10 Hoosiers from Bloomington, as a memorial site with 110 concrete pillars was visited + the tragedy led to key reforms in aviation safety.  WTHR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University held its undergraduate commencement on May 9 at Memorial Stadium as President Pamela Whitten addressed a crowd, and graduates celebrated with traditions (moving tassels, group hugs, and emotional moments) while awaiting their mailed diplomas.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington Parks and Recreation finished an initial assessment of the Frank Southern Ice Arena’s repairs after an ammonia leak in March and will soon hold stakeholder meetings to discuss its future under the new master plan (covering repair needs and community investment). The arena is scheduled to reopen in fall.  City of Bloomington

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA has issued a public health alert for Daisy Brand headcheese produced Jan. 20 by Crawford Sausage Co. in Indiana and Illinois after a sample tested positive for listeria. Although the product is no longer available, consumers with it should seek medical advice if symptoms occur.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Indiana Hoosiers softball team will start their fourth NCAA Tournament run Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 in the Knoxville regional against Virginia; the team comes off six wins in seven games (led by Aly VanBrandt and Avery Parker) as they aim to perform well.  The Herald-Times
  • The Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll presented by IU Health is open for voting until May 14 at noon.
