CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Bloomington offers the Cosmic Songwriter Festival with folk acts performing at local venues starting today, a kite-flying event at Switchyard Park on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., and the first Mini Midwest Print Fest at Badknees where a steamroller will create art prints. Other events include a jazz concert at Edgewood High on Friday and a vintage swap at Story Inn to support the Humane Society on Friday and Saturday.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A columnist at The Media School said the core curriculum does not prepare students for journalism because it focuses too much on technical skills instead of basic reporting. Dean David Tolchinsky said two new journalism faculty have been hired and a data journalism course added—though many students still worry they are not getting enough practice with core reporting techniques.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crawford Apartments on Henderson Street now has 22 damaged, noncompliant units, leaving residents in shelters or on the street while the city works to renew its rental permit—a meeting with property managers, developers, and Beacon is planned before the end of the month to address the issue. HAND director Anna Killion-Hanson stressed that protecting public safety and ensuring safe housing remain the city's priorities during this critical phase.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Bloomington’s city government has started a branding effort called WeAreBloomington with the help of CivicBrand to show the town’s real character and attract new business and talent. Residents can share their views in a public survey open until June 16th — the project will last a year and finish in early 2026.  City of Bloomington
  • The Indiana Geological and Water Survey announced Tuesday that it will be moved from the east wing of the Geology Building to a university-owned off-campus facility lacking lab space by the end of 2025, a change that staff say may reduce student research opportunities & hinder its ability to meet state grant obligations. The IGWS Learning Lab will close at the end of June, and the public is urged to share concerns with the IU Board of Trustees.  The Bloomingtonian

  • Matthews Mansion, a historic limestone home on 6445 W. Maple Grove Road, is for sale for $998,500 and features three bedrooms, a walk-out basement, three fireplaces & a wine cellar on 2.76 acres with annual taxes near $9,000. Built in the late 1870s and updated with modern features like soapstone countertops, the home is steeped in local lore, including myths about a famed French architect that a local realtor said is unlikely to be true.  The Herald-Times

  • Bloomington area high school sports for the week of May 12-17 show schedule changes and strong results from teams like North, South, Edgewood, Owen Valley, Eastern Greene and Lighthouse Christian. Several baseball and softball games are postponed while track, tennis and golf events feature standout individual performances — adding to a competitive week for local schools.  The Herald-Times
  • Former Indiana women's basketball players faced WNBA cuts as teams set final rosters. Grace Berger, a 25-year-old who played 47 games for the Fever, was waived by the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday—and Mackenzie Holmes, who missed her debut after major knee surgery, was cut by the Seattle Storm two days earlier.  The Herald-Times
