- ➤ The City of Bloomington announced that Bryan Park Pool at 1020 S. Woodlawn Ave. and Mills Pool at 1100 W. 14th St. will open for the 2025 season at 11 a.m. on May 24 and run daily until 7 p.m. through August 3 for weather-permitting days with admission at $7 per person. The Community Foundation Switchyard Plaza Spray Pad at Switchyard Park will open at 10 a.m. on May 24 and operate daily until 8 p.m. with free entry. City of Bloomington
- ➤ The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network has posted summer volunteer opportunities for the Escape from Oz event with Parks and Recreation on select June dates and for Project School youth support starting May 27 through early June; it also seeks volunteers for Lotus Education and Arts Foundation roles as well as food donations for a 40-year Community Kitchen program serving at-risk youth. Volunteers aged 16 and up are welcome to sign up through the network. The Herald-Times
- ➤ An EF-2 tornado struck Monroe County Friday night and destroyed two warehouses that held tools, equipment and building materials for Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, forcing the nonprofit to rebuild its work site—while cleanup continues in nearby neighborhoods—after the storm. WTHR
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On May 16, tornadoes hit Greene, Monroe, and Brown counties, killing a 33-year-old woman near Linton (a tree fell on her car) and injuring three children and a 96-year-old man. Monroe County saw damage to homes, a motel, and a post office while Brown County reported a campground visitor was hurt and one horse died (damage was widespread) as crews cleared debris. - ➤ The Monroe Fire Protection District has opened a new fire station at 478 E. Chambers Pike in Washington Township that is equipped with a rescue engine, brush truck, and water tender to reduce response times north of Bloomington. The district will host an open house on Saturday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.+ visitors can tour the facility and meet firefighters while enjoying grilled burgers and hotdogs. The Herald-Times

- ➤ Madelyn Mustaine, a master’s student at the IU O’Neill School, used an international grant to travel to Switzerland and study how Eastern practices can work with Western medicine to care for older and disabled people. She met with local health workers and learned about CBD therapy, meditation, and body rhythm practices to help shape future care. Indiana University

- ➤ Contractors began work early on April 30 to rebuild Bloomington North’s tennis courts, forcing the teams to play at South for this week’s sectionals. The project will install ten new courts on a flat surface using special concrete—designed to prevent cracks—and also shift soccer field locations to upgrade both schools’ facilities. The Herald-Times
