  • Bloomington's VFW Post 604 will sponsor a Memorial Day service at the Veterans' Memorial in Valhalla Memory Gardens on May 26—where free coffee, doughnuts, bottled water and golf carts for transportation will be provided—and the Bloomington Community Band will play at 9:30 a.m. before the 10 a.m. ceremony.  The Herald-Times
  • Memorial Day weekend in Bloomington kicks off summer as IU’s outdoor pool hosts a free open house Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 1833 N. Fee Lane and city pools at Bryan Park and Mills Pool open Saturday for swimming and a free splash pad, while various events—such as the Bluebird’s 90s Country Night and Minecraft Mania at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey—round out the long weekend with dancing, music, and a Summer Launch Party at Bryan Park.  The Herald-Times

CRIME NEWS

  • A probationary deputy was fired and arrested after an investigation found that an infant in his care had many injuries (some still healing) following a May 19 report from IU Health Bloomington Hospital, and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest on May 21 on charges including neglect and battery.  The Bloomingtonian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local leaders from multiple faith communities will attend a candlelight vigil outside the Monroe County Courthouse at 100 W. Kirkwood Ave on May 31st at 8:30 p.m. as part of an interfaith event organized by Indiana 50501—aiming to unite the community and uphold human rights amid rising concerns about the treatment of vulnerable populations.  The Bloomingtonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University was criticized after a report by FIRE found its free speech environment was poor and only 26% of students felt protected, with the campus ranking 243rd of 251 schools; a new law then gave Governor Mike Braun full control of the Board of Trustees—raising fears that IU's independence may be compromised.  The Bloomingtonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Bloomington updated its community resource guides to help residents access free or low cost services like health care, housing, and food. The new guides include separate versions for seniors and a guide for substance use disorder (covering treatment and recovery options) designed for easy printing.  City of Bloomington
  • Bloomington is offering new energy-saving incentives through Indiana Energy Saver to help renters, landlords, and homeowners lower utility bills by funding efficiency upgrades and appliance improvements. The initiative, which includes the HOMES and HEAR programs, may let eligible residents save thousands on projects—such as heat pump HVAC systems that can see costs drop significantly.  The Bloomingtonian
  • On May 19, 2025, the Monroe County Election Board did not implement vote centers because a unanimous vote was not reached—County Commissioners denounced the decision as a setback to voter access. They said that rejecting vote centers blocked simple voting procedures and could hinder turnout in future elections.  The Bloomingtonian

  • Bloomington South’s sprinter Khaliq Akou broke his 200-meter dash school record (22.03 seconds) in practice and is set to run in the boys’ track sectional today at Bloomington North at 5:30 p.m. His improved starts and persistent training have made him a key competitor for his team in the upcoming races.  The Herald-Times
