Good morning, Bloomington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 27th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Kitchen, Monroe County Community School Corp and Edgewood will provide free summer meals for kids at several sites across Bloomington. The programs offer breakfasts and lunches from May 27 through July for children 18 and younger (check with coordinators for times and locations).  The Herald-Times
  • Rogers Street near Switchyard Park will be closed from May 26 to June 7 — crew work is underway to build a raised ADA-accessible crosswalk tied to the Powerline Trail that restricts park access to the south side. City officials say parking remains open at Grimes Street and South Walnut Street.  The Herald-Times
  • The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network offers new volunteer opportunities starting June 1 for community roles including serving on the PRIDE board, working at Friend’s Place shelter in downtown (shifts from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.), bingo calling with Cedar Creek, and donating to the Materials for the Arts Wish List.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monroe County public school seniors will begin graduation ceremonies tomorrow at Jackson Creek Middle School Auditorium (6-7 p.m.), Friday at Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington (5-6 p.m.), and Saturday at Edgewood High School in Ellettsville (11 a.m.) and local high schools.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Edgewood's senior pitcher Anthony Shields switched from relief to starter and posted a 1.35 ERA in five starts with his Mustangs. He will face tougher competition in the Northview Sectional later this week (1-0 record) as his team readies for a challenging postseason run.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington North, South and Edgewood baseball teams are preparing for sectional title games by relying on deep pitching staffs and rotating aces for key matchups on June 1 and beyond (coaches note a 20-game test of depth amid injuries).  The Herald-Times
  • The Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll for May 18-23, presented by IU Health, is open for Bloomington residents to vote for nominees from North, South and Edgewood after Bloomington North boys volleyball won last week with 45.7% of the vote; the poll closes at noon Friday, May 29.  The Herald-Times
