CRIME NEWS

  • Bloomington police arrested 22-year-old Thomas Jacob Stinson on May 28 for felony kidnapping and battery after he allegedly grabbed a young girl on May 23 outside AMC Showplace Theater 12 on West Third Street—officials said his unsupervised outing raised questions about his supervision given his developmental disabilities.  The Bloomingtonian
  • A 25-year-old Solsberry man—identified as Jeffery A. Caldwell Jr.—was arrested around 11:20 p.m. on May 27 after he attempted to break into Meadows Hospital at 3600 N. Prow Road with a stick and shattered windows including one in a juvenile patient’s room, police said.  The Bloomingtonian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bloomington has a busy weekend of events that include a free foraging class on invasive plants Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Community Orchard—there is also a free screening of '10 Things I Hate About You' at dusk on the Indiana University campus, free outdoor Shakespeare plays at Waldron, Hill and Buskirk Park throughout the weekend, and a new 'City on the River' exhibit opens Saturday at the IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology while the Limestone Comedy Festival brings 60 comedians to various venues.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Janet McCabe, a former EPA deputy administrator, will return to IU faculty on July 1 with a yearlong appointment at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law, the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and the IU Environmental Resilience Institute. She will lead lectures, offer coaching to students, and work on climate projects—helping to strengthen local ties and advance environmental policy.  Indiana University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County set up four sites to dispose of debris from the May 16 tornado—three sites offer large dumpsters for house and roofing debris as well as tree debris until June 6 while a fourth site accepts only tree debris on weekdays.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington's ITS Department GIS team was awarded the Indiana Geographic Information Council Excellence in GIS Award—Large Community for its Crash Hub, a tool that shows vehicle crash data and helps improve roadway safety. The project came from work with Planning & Transportation and highlights the city’s focus on safety and clear data.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana basketball guard Tucker DeVries is nearing a full return as he recovers from a right shoulder injury he suffered at West Virginia last season that limited him to eight games and led to surgery last March; his coach said he is finishing his rehab and will be cleared for full contact drills next week—making him available for Indiana's foreign tour games in August.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington South girls track team won the regional title with 122 points over Columbus North's 108 by winning six events and breaking meet records, and they earned state berths along with Edgewood, North and Eastern Greene — setting up a strong chance at state next week.  The Herald-Times
  • IHSAA baseball sectionals are underway as teams in Bloomington, Martinsville, and Bedford compete in games that began on May 28 and continue today; upcoming rounds and championships are scheduled for June 2—local fans can track the scores as matchups progress across the region.
