COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bloomington community members gathered at 8:30 p.m. May 31 at the Monroe County Courthouse to hold a candlelight vigil supporting immigrants deported without hearings. About 75 people lit candles—local organizers said the protest addressed fears over ICE actions and the lack of due process in recent deportations.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Attendees held candles during the Candlelight Vigil for the Disappeared at the Monroe County Courthouse on May 31 as the 50501 Movement highlighted concerns over civil liberties and detentions without due process — video and photos captured the event.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Monroe County plans to demolish three apartment buildings — totaling 30 affordable housing units — on College Avenue to build a parking lot for a future convention center expansion. Some tenants have already experienced lease non-renewals and displacement, which may worsen Bloomington’s affordable housing crisis.  The Herald-Times

  • Bloomington-based startup CV Hops LLC launched its new patented CV-12 hop on June 1—bred to thrive under high heat and drought and developed with help from Hanley Hops LLC, Sandy Ridge Farms, and Michigan State University. The hop provides a bold aromatic flavor with citrus, spicy, and piney notes for craft brewers and is being studied at MSU for its disease resistance.  The Bloomingtonian
  • New owners of Elite Auto Group on South Walnut Street found more than 100 1:18 scale metal cars in plastic totes stored in an old car lot building—some wrapped in 1960s newspapers. They plan to sell the models at a future charity auction as they transform the space into a car club and repair workshop.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 1,000 Monroe County students graduated on Saturday, May 31, from public schools in Bloomington—they collectively earned nearly $15 million in academic scholarships, marking a significant milestone for the district.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are working on a road construction project that is closing the major east-west connector in southwest Bloomington—this work includes a roundabout near Batchelor Middle School and the library. The project costs about $18 million and crews expect to finish by Aug. 4.  The Herald-Times
  • Monroe County residents hit by the EF-2 tornado on May 16 can now apply for federal disaster loans from the SBA and the Indiana State Disaster Relief Fund under a declared disaster – a Disaster Loan Outreach Center will open soon to help with applications.  The Bloomingtonian

  • Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti said his team will ignore social media noise as they return for summer workouts in Bloomington—he stressed that avoiding distractions will help the Hoosiers stay focused and compete this fall.  The Herald-Times
