Good morning, Bloomington. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bloomington Parks and Recreation, Downtown Bloomington Inc. and IU Credit Union will sponsor the annual Fourth of July parade and concert planned for Friday, July 4. The Bloomington Community Band will perform at 9 a.m. at the south side of the Monroe County Courthouse and the parade—starting at College Avenue and 10th Street with 65 entries—will follow at 10 a.m. while extreme weather may cause delays or cancellation.  City of Bloomington
  • Hoosier Hills Food Bank will hold a drive-through food distribution on Friday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2333 W. Industrial Park Drive — each vehicle will receive one box of perishables and one box of dry staples tailored for children or seniors with no ID required. The event will help address rising food costs and the end of the Sun Bucks program that assisted over 600,000 children last summer.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sharon Kaye Aikman, a 60-year-old former hospice nurse and local internet influencer, has released her first cookbook, Putting the K in Kitchen, which shares family recipes and memories learned from her grandmother. Her long career in care—including fostering 19 children and starting a meal program that feeds 80 kids each week—helped her build a TikTok following that led to a publishing deal with Found.  The Bloomingtonian

  • The Ken Nunn Law Office announced a $1,000 scholarship for Indiana college students to ease tuition costs and other education expenses. • Indiana University's website has been partly down for over a week as security vulnerabilities forced UITS to shut down the old Sitehost system and begin rebuilding with the new SiteKube platform—about 90% of sites have been restored while efforts continue on pages essential for student needs. UITS said sites using IU’s web content management system will be tested within one to two days and further instructions to review and publish them will be sent in two to three days.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal cuts to NPR and PBS funding may force some Indiana public media stations to close if they lose needed money—smaller, rural stations already hurt by state budget cuts face layoffs and reduced programming. Local public broadcasters are urging lawmakers to protect funds to keep reliable news coverage available.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington officials issued formal notice to Cinnaire Solutions Corp + Continental Management for code violations at Crawford Apartments on Henderson Street and set a compliance deadline for Aug. 1. The action follows over 1,500 calls for service from Jan. 1, 2024 until May 13, and current tenants will not be forced to leave.  The B Square Bulletin
  • The Indiana University Police Department became the nation’s first accredited higher education law enforcement agency today when the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators recognized its unified leadership that serves all nine campuses under one chief executive + one accreditation manager.
