COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bloomington Fire Department has shared guidelines for safe fireworks use this Fourth of July, advising residents to buy from licensed sellers, store fireworks in a cool place, and use them only on approved property during set hours—residents are urged to keep children, pets, and those sensitive to loud sounds safe by following these tips and using extra caution around emergency supplies.  The Herald-Times
  • The Monroe County Fair will open June 30 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on W Airport Road and run until July 6 with carnival rides, live music, rodeo events and a demolition derby. Some special events like a Queen and Princess Pageant and monster truck rides require tickets while parking remains free during the fair.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Monroe County offers several fireworks shows for Fourth of July week, starting with a donation-based event at the Fairgrounds on June 27 at 7 p.m. + Additional celebrations will be held on July 4 at Lake Lemon, Bloomington Speedway, Grace Baptist Church, Emmanuel Church, and Fourwinds Lakeside Inn & Marina, while Ellettsville hosts its 30th annual free event on July 5 with a rain backup on July 6.  The Herald-Times
  • Randy Saunders has been named the new Scout Executive for the Hoosier Trails Council to oversee Scouting in 18 counties across south-central Indiana—his appointment, effective June 1, aims to increase local Scouting groups by 30% this fall.  The Bloomingtonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County sheriff Ruben Marté submitted a revised immigration enforcement policy document on June 24 in response to a lawsuit filed by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita. The policy was amended to comply with a new state law—addressing concerns raised in Rokita’s complaint about local enforcement practices.  The B Square Bulletin
  • The Monroe County Board of Health drafted a policy to govern public comment at meetings and discussed it on June 26. The board will hold a meeting on July 11 to collect public input + the discussions covered sign-ups and speaking times for both in-person and remote participants.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries secured a verbal commitment from four-star guard Prince-Alexander Moody of Bishop McNamara on Friday night, making him the first recruit for the 2026 class. The six-foot-four guard—ranked 170 overall and fifth in Maryland—will join IU’s growing team next season.  The Herald-Times
