COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network announced summer volunteer opportunities for local residents to work at Hoosier Hills Food Bank’s garden at Will Detmer Park on Mondays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon & to assist at Stone Belt Arc’s Fun Day on July 23 at 2815 E. 10th St. Volunteers will welcome Journey of Hope riders and support event activities.  The Herald-Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 23-year-old Bloomington man died in a fireworks accident on July 5 at about 10:30 p.m. on West Tabor Hill Road in Ellettsville—witnesses said he tried to light a large mortar held above his head—and police said the incident appears accidental.  WTHR
  • A 24-year-old Bedford man died in a collision on July 5 when his Harley Davidson crashed with a Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 19-year-old near the Monroe County Fairgrounds (the incident occurred at the intersection of West Ind. Road 45 and Airport Road at 6:08 p.m. with roads reopening at 8:30 p.m.) as investigators work to determine the cause.  The Herald-Times

  • Swifty Fest will return to Buskirk-Chumley Theater on Aug. 17 at 2:30 p.m. as The Bejewled Band performs Taylor Swift songs with planned costume changes representing her eras—ticket proceeds support Camp Broadcast.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington plans to build hundreds of affordable housing units on the former hospital site in the Hopewell neighborhood, and none of the units will be for students. Mayor Kerry Thomson said the city selected a developer to focus on workforce housing and that construction may start within six months.  WRTV
  • City of Bloomington Utilities will launch Utility Access—a new online portal that lets water, wastewater and stormwater customers manage accounts, view bills and track usage—starting August 4; new registrants must create an account with details from their latest bill while current eSuite users will need to set a new password.  City of Bloomington

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bloomington area high school athletes earned spring All-State awards for both athletic and academic achievements — baseball players received Class 4A honorable mentions and invitations to the North/South All-Star Series and Futures Games while track, softball, volleyball and tennis teams from several schools also earned honors.  The Herald-Times
  • A poll asks Bloomington residents to vote for a new summer sports event since options are few after high school and university seasons end. Voters will choose from ideas like a collegiate summer team or a semipro basketball game until Friday at noon.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana Fever will host the Dallas Wings on Sunday, July 13 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale starting at $126, and while star Paige Bueckers is expected to play, Caitlin Clark—recovering from a left quad strain and groin injury—might miss the game.  The Herald-Times
