CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives are investigating the death of 14-year-old Jamiyah Mayfield, who was found unresponsive at her West Hays Court apartment on July 2 and pronounced dead at IU Health Bloomington Hospital at 8:55 a.m., while her biological mother raises funds for funeral expenses as toxicology results are expected in about two months + police have not confirmed social media reports of abuse.  The Herald-Times
  • State Attorney General Todd Rokita accused Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marte of breaking an ICE hold by releasing Manuel Lopez Lopez—who pleaded guilty to a 2024 sexual assault, was released after 222 days in jail, and re-arrested on July 2 for assaulting a woman—while Marte said on July 10 there was no detainer and that ICE received proper notice.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County commissioners approved a deal with INDOT to pay $976,146 toward replacing the poor condition Eagleson Avenue bridge near the Indiana University campus next year—letting for the project will begin in January 2026.  The B Square Bulletin
  • The City of Bloomington has made 2025-2026 residential parking permits available online for residents of Neighborhood Parking Zones 1-6 — 9-11; applicants must submit required documents like current vehicle registration and proof of residency. Permits will be mailed after processing, and residents with questions may contact Parking Services at 812-349-3436.  Indiana Daily Student

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data shows that in April the median home sale price in Monroe County rose to $307,500—4.2% above March's $295,000 and lower than last April's $322,043—and single-family homes and townhomes increased by 3.2% and 9.6% respectively. Recorded sales in the county grew from 190 to 220, totaling $53 million in residential transactions.  The Herald-Times

  • Devin Taylor could be the first IU baseball player in more than a decade selected in the first round when the MLB draft begins Sunday — he has hit 54 home runs and is rated No 30 among prospects.
