CRIME NEWS

  • On July 18, a Bloomington apartment complex employee said he told a group to leave a closed pool when two women attacked him—police arrested a 21-year-old woman for battery and intimidation with a deadly weapon after recovering her firearm and a 30-year-old woman for robbery, battery, resisting arrest, and pending felony sexual misconduct charges.  The Herald-Times

  • The Wylie House Museum will host Saturday Crafternoons where local visitors join in craft sessions. Organizers say the event will offer a hands-on opportunity to experience art and the museum's history.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This fall, Indiana University will launch its free online course GenAI 101 to teach 20 generative AI skills to IU users (students, faculty and staff). The eight-module program covers prompt engineering, data storytelling and ethical AI use to build practical skills for today’s workforce.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana University will launch a free GenAI 101 course this fall that gives essential AI skills to students, faculty and staff as well as others with an IU login—this eight-module course includes real-time support from a learning agent named Crimson to help participants with practical applications like prompt engineering and ethical AI use.  Indiana University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Monroe remains above normal because heavy spring and summer rains have closed beaches and limited boat ramps, and officials are working on a safe reopening while further rains may delay a return to normal by late August. Local businesses and marinas have adjusted operations to offer alternative activities for residents.  The Herald-Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monroe County will open 10 cooling stations today and tomorrow at fire stations and libraries in Bloomington and Ellettsville to help residents beat temperatures of 91 and 92 degrees with heat indexes over 100 — the National Weather Service also warns of a very high UV index during peak hours.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lance Fox and his late father Ted Fox will be inducted into the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame on July 25—making them the first father-son pair honored this way for their achievements in pole vault. They set records in Bloomington and the ceremony will be held at the Monroe County Convention Center.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana football defensive end Mikail Kamara and defensive back D’Angelo Ponds were named to the Big Ten preseason honor roll on Tuesday by a 16-person media panel. Kamara, who led IU with 10 sacks last season—his best mark since 2008—and Ponds, who earned second-team All-American honors as a sophomore, look to help the team chase a national title this season.  The Herald-Times
  • Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti defended Indiana football's cancellation of nonconference series against Louisville and Virginia by saying the schedule was built for competitive balance—while Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson stressed that strategic scheduling is key to setting the team up for postseason success.  The Herald-Times
