CRIME NEWS

  • Bloomington police are searching for a man accused of assaulting three dancers at Night Moves on July 29—he allegedly choked two 21-year-olds during private dances and grabbed a 20-year-old employee’s buttocks before fleeing on foot.  The Bloomingtonian
  • A Bloomington man, Michael Devin Skie Hartman, 28, faces new Level 6 felony charges including strangulation and domestic battery for allegedly attacking his mother and her boyfriend on July 27 at a residence on West Heatherwood Lane—he also is charged with interfering with crime reporting and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery, and he remains in custody at Monroe County Jail—his prior charges for a separate street assault add to his legal troubles.  The Bloomingtonian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Indiana Uplands READI Steering Committee with ROI and IEDC announced $4,093,000 in READI 2.0 funding to drive projects that will expand housing in Huntingburg and Leavenworth, boost childcare in Nashville, and improve healthcare in Washington. Among these, Poplar Ridge Apartments in Huntingburg held its groundbreaking ceremony on July 30 at 11:45 a.m.—a key step in a broader regional plan to attract industry and enhance community services.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bloomington schools will open at different times this fall—Monroe County Community School Corp classes start Aug.6 while Indiana University begins classes on Aug.25 with move-ins on Aug.19—20. Seven Oaks Classical School in Ellettsville will start classes on Aug.12.  The Herald-Times
  • Blair Johnson and Zachary Schlader completed the new extreme environmental chamber at IU School of Public Health-Bloomington — the facility reaches minus 40°C and over 120°F and will support research on how extreme temperatures affect human health and outdoor work. The chamber provides space for multiple study participants and will guide future studies on warming and cooling challenges.  Indiana University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Kerry Thomson said that other Indiana jurisdictions are sending homeless individuals to Bloomington, which is straining city services, and she urged those jurisdictions to stop transferring nonresidents—some of whom come seeking services but end up staying when they cannot return home. She also explained plans to ease housing development by auditing permitting procedures, revising the zoning ordinance, and ensuring Crawford Apartments meets city code by Aug. 1 while police took action near local areas.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Mayor Kerry Thomson said on July 29 that Bloomington will limit homeless services to residents of local six counties—she explained that mental health, substance use treatment, and housing supports will be directed to locals while police work to curb drug dealing in the area. This plan will use Lilly grant funds and revised case management to better serve the community's needs.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington will argue an annexation case before the Indiana Supreme Court on Oct 30 — the case challenges a 2019 law affecting five annexation areas by questioning if invalidating remonstrance waivers interferes with legal contracts. City officials say the court will review this constitutional issue while a separate case on annexation merits is scheduled for Aug. 19.  The B Square Bulletin

  • Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries said that guard Jason Drake and forward Nick Dorn were injured during Wednesday's practice and may miss part of the trip to Puerto Rico starting Monday, August 4. He noted that Dorn might also miss additional time in the fall as the team evaluates their recoveries.  The Herald-Times
