  • The City of Bloomington will host the National Million Father March at Fairview Elementary School on Wednesday, August 6 at 8:30 a.m.—an event organized by the City Commission on the Status of Black Males to encourage fathers, father figures, and mentors to accompany students during the first week of school.  City of Bloomington

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, 13 Bloomington art galleries are open late from 5 to 8 p.m. for Gallery Walk and feature paintings, photos, and live music — a sampling that highlights local art at spots like Backspace, Juniper, and By Hand.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Bloomington’s first Summer Soul Fest will be held at Upland Brewing on Aug. 9 from 5—11 p.m.—doors open at 4 p.m.—featuring five live acts including The Dynamics, King Bee and The Stingers, and the featured artist Birdena Lee Oakley. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door as the event offers soul, funk and blues music with food and drinks.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University tightened its non-academic hiring review process on July 28 due to funding cuts—new job requests now need multi-level approval while positions already in process are unaffected. The change comes as federal grants were cut and tuition remained frozen, signaling possible future cost-cutting measures.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington’s city council extended a tax break for Union at Crescent, a 5-story housing complex with 146 low-income units in northwest Bloomington, saying that occupancy issues were caused by factors outside the owner’s control. The vote lowers the taxes by about $114,720 in 2025 and came after the group managing the property said it is spending money on security and repairs to boost occupancy by November — steps aimed at fixing safety and maintenance problems.  The B Square Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana University is co-leading a new national center that will build stem cell brain models to study Alzheimer’s disease using a five-year $16.5 million grant from the National Institute on Aging—one of only two centers of its kind. Researchers will use brain organoids to test treatment ideas and explore the disease’s causes to speed up drug discovery.  Indiana University
  • Erin Mullin, vice president of human resources at Putnam County Hospital, completed IU’s online Master of Science in Healthcare Management and used her classroom lessons to expand rural healthcare access. She led projects that developed a mobile care plan and a dementia caregiver connector program that will be shared with rural hospitals across Indiana — addressing key community needs.  Indiana University

  • Indiana football’s Big Ten opener against Illinois on Sept. 20 at Memorial Stadium sold out—few tickets remain for the nonconference opener on Aug. 30 against Old Dominion and the homecoming game on Oct. 18, and coach Curt Cignetti expects sellouts all season.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana Athletics announced the 40th Hall of Fame class and said six inductees will be honored on Sept. 5—celebrations will continue during the halftime of the Indiana-Kennesaw State football game on Sept. 6 at Memorial Stadium.
