  • The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter will hold a matching fundraiser (Double the Love) from September 1 to September 21 to help pay for emergency surgeries and care for animals in need. Every donated dollar will be matched (up to $20,000) as the shelter works to treat sick and injured animals.  City of Bloomington

CRIME NEWS

  • A Bloomington man faces felony drug charges after Indiana State Police discovered 64 grams of cocaine, suspected heroin, and marijuana in a red 2009 Audi during a May 29 traffic stop on North Walnut Street in Monroe County — authorities said the suspect, Robert Miles, admitted to marijuana possession and now faces additional charges.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Bloomington Police and Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement arrested 12 people on August 25th at two homes on West Terry Lane and North Fairview Street — both near a school or park — after months of investigation led to the seizure of over 1.5 pounds of meth, cocaine, crack, heroin, six handguns and more than $13,500 in cash.  The Bloomingtonian

  • Indiana University is hosting a series of free events starting Sept. 3 to honor Celia Cruz’s 100th birthday with film screenings, live music and dance performances, lectures and exhibits on campus—additional workshops and dialogue events are scheduled for Sept. 5 and Sept. 6.  The Herald-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fairfax SRA’s beach reopened on August 22 after high water forced its closure while Paynetown SRA remains closed for the season due to plumbing damage in the beach house—repairs cannot be done in time. The lake stays under a Yellow Advisory because blue-green algae persist and fishing piers remain off-limits until water levels drop below the safe threshold.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County Public Library’s downtown branch in Bloomington will close two hours earlier on weekdays starting November 24 due to state budget cuts that reduce property tax revenue by about $350,000 and low patron turnout after 7:30 p.m. Library director Grier Carson said the change—designed to prevent staff layoffs—aligns its hours with other branches.  The Herald-Times

  • Bloomington woman Kourtney Stroud won 24 colored ribbons and a grand champion honor for red onions at the Indiana State Fair on Aug.17 — she used skills from her 4-H days to grow prize vegetables despite bad weather and tight pickup timing.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last night, Indiana men’s soccer defeated San Francisco 3-2 with sophomore Easton Bogard scoring his first goal to give the team a crucial lead. Coach Todd Yeagley said Bogard’s energy and teammate Nolan Kinsella’s assist helped spark the comeback—boosting their momentum this season.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Owen Valley ended its tough season with a 46-24 win at Brown County — a relief for coach Eric Crouch and the team after last year's struggles. Edgewood won 38-0 over Mitchell while Eastern Greene lost 58-7 as teams continue to compete and build for the season.  The Herald-Times
  • Jacopo Fedrizzi scored two goals to help No. 11 Indiana men's soccer beat the University of San Francisco 3-2 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The junior midfielder has been a key player since joining in January—his play has boosted team momentum.  Indiana Daily Student
