CULTURE NEWS

  • IU students transformed rural towns by installing murals, parklets, and public art during the Rural Placemaking Studio open house held last Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. — community members and university staff praised the project, which involved 16 counties and a $100,000 pledge, and they will invite new proposals in winter.  Indiana Daily Student

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, author Ethan Tapper spoke at Monroe County Public Library about caring for forests and his book How to Love a Forest. He joined a panel discussion with local conservation group representatives – they said that careful forest management helps heal fragile ecosystems.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana University Bloomington professor Brian Yanites studies cascading hazards that make natural disaster risks more complex as extreme weather increases—he is one of five principal investigators on a team awarded $15 million by the National Science Foundation to develop improved geomorphic models that help communities plan for future weather threats.  Indiana University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County commissioners voted on Thursday to approve DLZ Corporation’s plans to design a new jail and justice center at North Park between Bloomington and Ellettsville — the project is set to be completed by 2029 but funding remains uncertain due to state SEA 1 rules.  The B Square Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monroe County Health Department said the FDA approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for people who are 65 and older and those with health problems, but it is still unclear when doses will be available locally—residents should check with their insurance for details. The CDC advisory committee will meet on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19 to offer more guidance.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana women’s soccer drew 2-2 with No. 24 Xavier on Thursday at Bill Armstrong Stadium, with freshman defender Grace Hamm scoring her first goal to give the Hoosiers an early lead—though Xavier tied the match soon after. The team won a penalty to equalize and will build on their performance as they prepare to face Ohio University on Sunday at 1 p.m.—hoping to gain momentum in Big Ten play.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football will face Kennesaw State today at Memorial Stadium at noon on FS1 — the team won 27-14 over Old Dominion and aims to improve its red zone play. The Kennesaw State squad, with new coach Jerry Mack and starting quarterback Dexter Williams II, will try to rebuild its offense — a change after a difficult season.  The Herald-Times
  • Pickleball courts for Indiana Center for Recovery are taking shape near 1st Street and Walker Street—construction is underway to add a new recreational feature in Bloomington.  The B Square Bulletin
