  • Lan Ramen reopened on Aug. 28 at 217 W. Sixth St. with a menu that features handmade ramen, dumplings, and specialty drinks in a space formerly used by Nourish; Caribbean Tings joined Food Truck Friday offering Caribbean flavors like oxtail dinners and Haitian meatballs—adding to the weekly lineup.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former students and colleagues will honor the late band director Janis Stockhouse at a free tribute concert on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Bloomington High School North Auditorium—alumni will perform symphonic and jazz selections to celebrate her legacy.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Tale Blazing—subtitled MIRACULUM—will return on Oct. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Hundredth Hill Artist Retreat north of Bloomington with five bonfires hosting storytellers who will share creative, personal stories about life’s turning points.  The Bloomingtonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three retired Indiana University professors filed a lawsuit against the board of trustees and a state law over a new policy that bans emeritus faculty from serving on faculty governance—challenging rules that have limited their long-standing roles. A hearing took place Tuesday before Judge Emily Salzmann and an order is expected by Sept 16 to clear the way for the upcoming Faculty Council meeting on Sept 23.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Indiana University was ranked near the bottom in the 2026 Free Speech Rankings released Tuesday by FIRE and College Pulse—earning an 'F' from a survey of over 68,000 students that also found one in three believed violence was acceptable to stop campus speech. Local critics say this ranking reflects long-running concerns about how the administration defends open expression.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Indiana University and Instructure were awarded NSF funding to plan TOPSAIL— a testbed for evaluating AI tools in learning via Canvas— and the two-year project will include partnerships with K-12 school districts to develop protocols that protect student privacy and safety. This initiative will set a new standard for research in education by enabling rigorous testing of emerging AI technologies.  Indiana University

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Contractors have begun work at the former hospital site in the Hopewell neighborhood where up to 175 affordable housing units are planned, as improvements include a new storm system, water lines, and a protected bike lane connecting the B-Line with Bloomfield Road. The historic administration building will be renovated for housing that may open by next summer—road closures are scheduled for fall on nearby streets.  WRTV

  • Indiana University in collaboration with Indiana Sports Corp and Pacers Sports & Entertainment will soon launch the Female Sports Performance and Research Initiative at TEDSports Indianapolis to fill gaps in research on women's health and training. The program will produce data for better training and injury prevention for athletes — offering hands-on research opportunities for students and clinicians.  Indiana University
  • Indiana football safety Louis Moore’s attorneys reached an agreement with the NCAA to push the hearing in his lawsuit from Sept. 9 to Sept. 24 at 11 a.m.—this keeps him eligible through Week 4 as the Hoosiers prepare to face Indiana State Friday and No. 9 Illinois on Sept. 20.  The Herald-Times
  • The Bloomington South boys tennis team beat No. 19 Bloomington North 3-2 on Tuesday with a doubles sweep and key singles wins—head coach Matt Corry said he is focused on building team character as the Panthers prepare for tougher matchups.  The Herald-Times
