COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A locally owned nonprofit, Sacred Revolution Ascension Center, will launch the B-Town Sapphic Circle next week with a fundraiser at Lake Monroe. The event, called Sunset (Tarot in the Wild), will be held on Monday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. and will offer tarot readings, dinner, music, and networking while raising funds to secure nonprofit status for expanded mentorship programs.  The Bloomingtonian

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco issued a recall on its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene sparkling wine after tests showed the bottles could shatter when not in use — bottles sold between April 25 and August 26 in states including Indiana— and customers with a recall letter are advised to dispose of the bottles by wrapping them in paper towels and a plastic bag to avoid broken glass while receiving a refund.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Constellation Stage & Screen will host two interactive screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Buskirk Chumley Theater on Saturday, Oct. 25 to mark the film's 50th anniversary and its 20th year hosting Bloomington's Rocky Horror event. Audiences will join pre-shows beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a costume contest, devirginization ceremony and prizes as local drag queen Oriana Perón hosts the festivities.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Indiana University Dance Marathon will host its 20th annual Gala on Friday, Sept 19 to honor former student leader Ashley Louise Crouse—who died in a car accident in 2005—and raise funds for her ALC Legacy Endowment that supports Riley Hospital for Children and IUDM efforts. The event will feature a gourmet dinner and auctions that add to the celebration of her lasting legacy.  The Bloomingtonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monroe County Community School Corporation paid over $5 million to 64 administrators in 2024 which raised the cost per pupil from about $315 in 2019 to approximately $515—administrative roles increased by 15 amid cuts of 60 support staff and a review of every position. Comparisons with Richland Bean Blossom School Corporation have fueled ongoing debate over administrative compensation.  The Herald-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Concerned Scientists @ IU submitted a public comment opposing the EPA proposal to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding that regulates greenhouse gases. They said the proposal conflicts with laws like the Clean Air Act and the Inflation Reduction Act— public comments remain open until Sept. 22.  The Bloomingtonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Bloomington’s ITS Department has launched the Bloomington Community Map—a new online tool that helps residents, businesses, and visitors quickly access essential details like nearby parks, zoning, and neighborhood boundaries. Users can enter an address in CivicSearch to view local amenities and check key statistics on the map’s dashboard.  City of Bloomington
  • At its meeting, the Redevelopment Commission approved $75,000 for mold cleanup at 714 S. Rogers and raised the soil remediation contract to $215,890 at the Hopewell site near 2nd and Rogers after workers found three underground fuel tanks—measures that help prepare the property for a future police station. Members said further updates will come as they review cost estimates and overall plans.  The B Square Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • B and B Water Project recommended customers boil their drinking water due to a water main break that lowered water pressure and exposed it to bacteria. The advisory affects 1,850 Monroe County households and is expected to lift within 24 to 48 hours—households should boil water for three to five minutes before use.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana men's basketball fans will get their first look at head coach Darian DeVries at the Cream and Crimson Scrimmage on Friday, Oct. 3, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall — the game will tip off at 7 p.m. ET with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. as fans are invited to bring canned food for Hoosier Hills Food Bank.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Indiana football quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for 708 yards with nine touchdowns in three games and is set to face Illinois' experienced secondary this weekend—he recorded a 72.4% completion rate while ranking sixth nationally. Illinois defensive coordinator Aaron Henry praised Mendoza’s live arm and downfield vision—highlighting his near-perfect play in a win that ended 73 to 0 over Indiana State.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington South grad David Kovacs, a state champion and IU freshman, was named to the USA Swimming Junior National team today—he will train with elite swimmers over the next year to improve his backstroke, 200 individual medley, and other events. He looks forward to the new opportunities and increased competition that come with the honor.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington South's volleyball team defeated Bloomington North in three straight sets on Sept.16, ending a losing streak of four games and raising its record to 15—3 while North dropped to 2—9. The win gave the Panthers confidence as they are now one win away from a conference title.  The Herald-Times
