COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pantry 279 in Ellettsville will host Duke Energy Cares tomorrow as founder Cindy Chavez expects hundreds to line up outside the building to receive food and services from returning agencies — Duke Energy is contributing $8,000 to cover extra supplies and staff wages, and the pantry will be open from 1 to 7 p.m.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington Volunteer Network lists several volunteer opportunities this October (residents will work at the Community Orchard on Oct. 11 at 2120 S Highland Ave, assist with the Banneker Fall Fashion Show on Oct. 3-4 at 930 W. Seventh St, volunteer at Crested Hill Refuge for equine programs, or donate pet food and supplies to Monroe County Humane Association at 791 S. Fieldstone Blvd).  The Herald-Times
  • On January 29, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority released its annual point-in-time count showing that Bloomington and Monroe County’s homeless population dropped from 339 last year to 305 people. Beacon leader Forrest Gilmore said residents still face severe housing instability as high rent and low apartment vacancy keep many struggling.  WRTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucker Carlson will speak at IU on Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. as part of Turning Point USA’s campus tour, replacing Charlie Kirk who was fatally shot on Sept. 10—this free event honors Kirk’s mission and continues his legacy.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University admitted a record 10,127 freshmen at Bloomington this fall, setting a new campus record with about 200 more students than last year. The class includes more Asian Americans as the largest minority group—out-of-state enrollment grows while first-generation numbers fall.  The Herald-Times
  • A Monroe County judge denied retired Indiana University professors—Steven Sherman, Alex Tanford, and Russell Skiba—motion to keep their seat on the Bloomington Faculty Council after a policy change removed them in June. They filed a lawsuit against the Board of Trustees to challenge the new policy and Indiana code section, and the court ruled they are unlikely to succeed at this stage.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti said his team will face a tougher challenge at Iowa’s sold-out Kinnick Stadium where the loud crowd and strong defense will test them—he also noted his respect for coach Kirk Ferentz’s long career.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana sports had a standout weekend as the Hoosiers beat ranked Illinois 63 to 10 and the Colts started 3 to 0 by scoring 103 points in their first three games. Cathedral High grad Cole Hocker won gold in the 5,000 meters at the World Championships in Tokyo—clear signs that tougher challenges lie ahead.  WTHR
