Good morning, Bloomington. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 27th of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2025 Lotus World Music & Arts Festival is underway in downtown Bloomington as artists from over 20 cultures perform music, dance and art along East Kirkwood Avenue—at the downtown public library and square. The festival began on Sept. 25 and will close on Sept. 28.  The Herald-Times
  • BloomingArts Theatre Company announced fall programs for young performers. It will hold a two-day workshop from Nov. 22 to Nov. 23 at Indiana University’s Lee Norvelle Theatre for students ages 13–19 and offer college audition coaching packages for high school seniors costing between $79 and $149 (aiming to build skills in singing, dancing and acting).  The Bloomingtonian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, 40 to 50 million birds are flying over Indiana during peak fall migration as cool nights and north winds push them south. Local residents are urged to turn off unnecessary outdoor lights—helping birds avoid collisions.  WTHR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson said the city will ask the Indiana Supreme Court to review an Appeals Court ruling that blocked its plan to annex two rural areas—areas where limited public works and police staffing halted growth efforts. The Thomson administration contends that allowing annexation is vital for the long-term economic health of the region.  The Herald-Times
  • Attorney General Todd Rokita announced on Sept. 25 that state legal contracts will now require law firms to reject DEI training and related practices and instead prove merit-based excellence. The new rules, effective in October, support Gov. Mike Braun’s earlier efforts to end state spending on DEI programs — a move critics say may cement existing power structures.  The Bloomingtonian

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana football will play Iowa today at 3:30 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium—coach Curt Cignetti said the loud crowd gives Iowa a strong home advantage that Indiana must overcome to show its playoff potential.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington native Violet Hall of Bloomington South will compete at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India — she will run in the 100 and 200 dash events in the T47 category. She is one of two high school athletes on the USA team who qualified at the Para Nationals in Eugene.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington area high school football teams are set to play tonight as Edgewood, extending a 6-0 start, takes on 3-2 Beech Grove at 7 p.m. while unbeaten Bloomington South hosts winless Southport—other local schools like Bloomington North, Owen Valley, and Eastern Greene have key matchups scheduled this week.  The Herald-Times
  • Bloomington track stars Ellie Barada — a state champion in middle-distance — and Caleb Winders announced their verbal commitments to the University of North Carolina via Instagram posts. Both athletes said they made independent decisions after official visits and will focus on their fall sports season.  The Herald-Times
