- ➤ Hundreds donated money to help local artist Joel Washington stay housed as the community came together to prevent his eviction—his long work and beloved presence in Bloomington was noted by supporters. The Herald-Times

- ➤ Indiana University partnered with venture capitalist Plug and Play on Tuesday to launch the IU LAB Accelerator for Biosciences where twelve startup companies pitched ideas for new medical devices and treatments. IU LAB CEO David Rosenberg said the program will strengthen the biosciences industry—turning research into products and connecting innovators with industry leaders. WTHR

- ➤ Indiana University faculty, staff and students are hosting a campus-community forum titled 'Stand Up for Science' today at 5 p.m. in Myers Hall Room 130—organized by Concerned Scientists @ IU and Advocates for Science @ IU to promote evidence-based decision making. The Bloomingtonian
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monroe County is now in moderate drought as no rain this past week pushed areas that were once partly dry into full drought, and Bloomington received just 0.03 inches on September 25. Lower than normal rainfall for the month may result in blue green algae in local ponds and stressed crops. The Herald-Times
- ➤ Bloomington residents will see fall colors later than usual because warm weather keeps leaves green longer. Forecasts show that peak foliage will occur in northern Indiana from Oct. 25 to Oct. 31, in central areas from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5, and in southern regions from Nov. 6 to Nov. 10 — a good rain may boost brightness if conditions change. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The 300 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, which holds the Monroe County Public Library, will reopen to vehicle traffic and parking on Friday, Oct. 3 after Hoosier Hoops ends its run. Other Kirkwood blocks will stay closed through Nov. 10 to preserve alleyway parking access — downtown metered lots and street options remain available. City of Bloomington
- ➤ Bloomington’s municipal code makes drinking on public sidewalks unlawful—except at events where a temporary beer permit is issued, like Taste of Bloomington. Indiana law permits open containers in parks and on sidewalks, but public intoxication remains illegal and minors cannot possess alcohol. The Herald-Times
- ➤ IU Student Government released preliminary fall election results Tuesday from 782 ballots showing Amendment 1 passed with 52.22% of the vote to let the vice president break ties in Congress and Amendment 2 passed with 65.09% to allow multicultural clubs to petition for congressional seats—both changes that alter the voting process for student representatives. The special election filled 19 congressional seats from on- and off-campus districts, and the results will be certified by the supreme court. Indiana Daily Student

- ➤ After Week 6, high school football coaches have named top MVP candidates as junior quarterback Duncan Combs leads the offense while backup Shaun Cooper and players from North and Edgewood step up—defensive leaders like Ross Ogden, Noah Ferree, and versatile athletes such as Gunnar Perry are also strong contenders.
