ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out on Wednesday just after 3 p.m. at First Christian Church in downtown Bloomington, causing an evacuation and billowing smoke over the area—Bloomington Fire Department quickly extinguished the blaze with seven trucks and one ambulance, reporting no injuries while the cause remains under investigation.  Indiana Daily Student

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cook Medical will hold a job fair on October 23 at its Park 48 facility in Bloomington to interview and possibly hire manufacturing assemblers. Attendees must bring a photo ID, contact information, work experience and a diploma – requirements needed for on-site electronic applications and potential same-day job offers.  The Bloomingtonian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Constellation Stage and Screen will stage You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown from Nov 1—16 at the Waldron Arts Center to mark the 75th anniversary of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts with local and regional performers led by Bloomington native Connor Starks as Charlie Brown. A sensory-friendly performance will take place on Nov 16 at 4 p.m. with adjusted features, and tickets start at $18 for children and $28 for adults.  The Bloomingtonian
  • IU Auditorium announced that all season shows will include free pre-show talks that provide extra historical—cultural and technical details, and they will take place one hour before each performance in Fine Arts Building Room 015; the talks for The Book of Mormon start on Friday and Saturday while other shows in October will feature similar presentations.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bloomington families and students are invited to attend the College and Career Pathway Fair on Oct. 27 at the Hoosier Hills Career Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The event will let attendees meet instructors and experts — and explore programs offering technical training, dual credits and industry certifications to support future careers.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Monroe County Community School Corp will have a $6.2 million smaller budget in 2026 as state tax cuts and declining enrollment force the district to cut funds—operations drop from $44.9 million to $38.6 million while education funds fall from $87.4 million to $86 million. The school board will vote on the 2026 budget on Oct. 28 and it will be reviewed by state finance officials in December.  The Herald-Times
  • Construction on the historic Bill Garrett Fieldhouse continues as IU renovates the aging facility to install new air systems and updated labs while students face overcrowding at the Student Recreational Sports Center—access is limited until summer next year. Phase two will add major mechanical work and a new locker room near Royer Pool to boost student facilities.  Indiana Daily Student

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with Bloomington’s Urban Greenspace programs planted rows of tree saplings in Crestmont Park and other parks to help boost the city’s canopy—cutting costs for residents amid rising expenses for tree care. The new Tree Assistance Program will help qualifying homeowners with removal and planting fees while additional plantings are scheduled in Waterman, Near West Side, and Pigeon Hill.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council passed a resolution that created a new affordable housing PILOT fund which moves payments from the general fund into a separate account—about $150,000 from past transfers and future contributions from Henderson Court and Cambridge Square will go towards low-income housing support. This fund will be used to help residents buy or lease homes and support affordable housing projects.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington Transit and IU Campus Bus Service changed bus routes that serve IU campus and other Bloomington areas ahead of the fall semester and introduced fare-free digital passes for IU students—students must download the Umo Mobility app to ride without a fare. The changes affect stops on routes 6, 9, and 13 as well as routes E, F, and X, including adjustments for Tulip Tree Apartments.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Indiana men's golf team scored 12 under par and finished ninth at Windon Memorial Classic at Knollwood Country Club — sophomore Bradley Chill Jr. tied for sixth with rounds of 70, 69, and 69. The team will play next at the Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 6-7 at Warren Golf Course.  The Bloomingtonian
