COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Bloomington is hosting a busy series of events in October and November that include IU Homecoming festivities on Oct. 18 and a Trick or Treat on Oct. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m.—artisan sales on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1—2, a Handmade Market on Nov. 8—9, plus a Canopy of Lights with Santa on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. and a Holiday Farmers’ Market on Nov. 29.  The Herald-Times
  • Due to rising costs and limited housing, more pet owners have surrendered animals to the Bloomington Animal Shelter, prompting staff to work overtime as intake reached 3,328 in 2024—Director Virgil Sauder said many now struggle to care for their pets. Monroe County’s Crisis Housing Center is expanding its boarding capacity to help owners but still falls short of meeting the growing demand.  Indiana Daily Student

  • A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon October 1 that damaged Bloomington First Christian Church—officials are investigating its cause.  The Herald-Times

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sept. 26, Bobby Ballard—a homeless man—lost several teeth when he was assaulted on Kirkwood after a dispute over his cell phone, two men were arrested, and by Oct. 1 a fundraiser had raised nearly $10,000 to help cover his dental treatment.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Freelance photographer Bobby Goddin's image captured during the 2024 total eclipse won Photo of the Year by the HSPA—his award-winning picture of an airplane crossing the sun was taken at Indiana University's Memorial Stadium. Other Herald-Times staff also earned honors, with Rich Janzaruk receiving awards for his portrait photo and Carol Kugler receiving recognition for business coverage.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at IU now have a new option for kosher and halal meals at Yalla— a Mediterranean-style café in Godfrey Center open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; freshman Akiva Winkle said the café helps him easily find food that meets his dietary needs as IU Dining partnered with Chabad to expand options on campus.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Monroe County Community School Corp is facing a software integration issue due to a recent update to the Skyward system—affecting the automatic sharing of high school transcripts for college applications. The school's Information Services team is manually processing transcript requests while it works to resolve the integration with Parchment ahead of application deadlines.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After working until 11 p.m. Tuesday, Monroe County councilors approved a hiring freeze, cut longevity pay, and maintained a 3% COLA for county employees despite a $4.41 million deficit in the draft 2026 budget—councilors will set an economic development local income tax budget by Oct 3 and meet for a special session on Oct 8 before the final adoption on Oct 14.  The B Square Bulletin
  • City Council postponed the plan to name the area around Miller-Showers Park as Stadium District after residents raised concerns about linking their homes to a university sports hub. Council will review the proposal Oct. 22 and may adjust the boundaries to focus only on commercial areas—keeping residential sections separate.  Indiana Daily Student
  • At Monday’s City Council meeting, officials said they eliminated $300,000 in DEIB training funds because the money was never used and state and federal rules require compliance. The unused funds will roll over for other services as the city prepares for a budget hearing at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday—officials noted.  Indiana Daily Student

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana University researchers received a $3.7 million grant from NIDA to study how ADHD medications affect substance use in Medicaid youth. The study will analyze data from over 3.3 million patients and compare treatment patterns, including differences in treatment duration among racial groups, to provide clearer evidence for care decisions.  Indiana University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana women's basketball coach Teri Moren said last season the locker room was not in good shape—players struggled with hard conversations during losses. She has turned to redshirt sophomore Lenée Beaumont to lead the team in building a healthier locker room.  The Herald-Times
  • The Indiana field hockey team, with a 4-5 record, returns home today to face UC Davis, which also holds a 4-5 record, at 3 p.m. on Big Ten+ — they aim to improve their net performance after recent struggles.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Today, No. 12 Indiana men’s soccer will face top-ranked Washington at 10 p.m. on Big Ten Network, and Coach Todd Yeagley expects junior forward Clay Murador—who scored his first collegiate goal on Sept. 26 after returning from injury—to play a key role in the contest.  Indiana Daily Student
