EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University researchers in Bloomington are using artificial intelligence and machine learning to speed up biomedical studies with acoustofluidics—contactless sound waves handle cells with a lab-on-a-chip system. The lab led by Feng Guo received a $1.5 million NIH grant and will add new postdoctoral and undergraduate researchers to boost research.  Indiana University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Bloomington announced the 2025 Local-Motion Grant Program to support community projects that improve walking and biking infrastructure—applications from nonprofit organizations, neighborhood groups, and local businesses can receive up to $2,400 each until Nov. 3.  City of Bloomington
  • Indiana University Foundation sold 57 pieces of land in 13 batches to the IU Board of Trustees on Sept. 18 for about $23.38 million—each batch was priced below $2 million. The properties include university offices, vacant lots, and residential areas, but no explanation has been offered for the transfer.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Monroe County commissioner Lee Jones confirmed she is undergoing leukemia treatment, which was diagnosed in late July, and said she will continue to serve using remote connection for meetings. She plans to attend at least three commissioners meetings each month — noting that occasional rough patches are expected as her treatment is refined and she looks to be back to herself by February.  The B Square Bulletin
  • Bloomington Parks and Recreation invites residents to an interactive community workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 — one of the final opportunities for input on its five-year master plan — held at the Pavilion in Switchyard Park at 1601 S. Rogers St; a final survey will then be mailed to selected households.  City of Bloomington
  • The latest Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority report shows Monroe County’s Point-In-Time count dropped by 12.8% on Jan. 29 — recording 305 people compared to 45 more last year. Local experts say the small decline may be due to updated data methods and more study is needed to see if this trend will continue.  Indiana Daily Student
  • At its Oct. 2 meeting, Monroe County’s election board talked about reopening the vote centers debate for the 2026 elections as Penny Githens asked to use an existing plan while board chair Danny Shields kept his dissent—further discussions may happen later in October after more input from Indiana’s secretary of state. The board also looked at plans to combine voter registration and early voting in the North Showers building, with a contract approved for renovations and early voting space set to be ready before primary voting starts April 7.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana field hockey beat UC Davis 5-0 on Friday as sophomore forward Mijntje Hagen scored three goals to boost her season total to five—helping the team secure a shutout with no shots on target from the Aggies. The Hoosiers will face Rutgers on Oct. 10 before playing Miami on Oct. 13.  Indiana Daily Student
  • At Indiana University's first Hoosier Hoops on Kirkwood event, coach Darian DeVries treated fans at Upstairs Pub — a popular downtown bar — by buying a round of beers while freshman Trent Sisley hit a trick shot off a balcony to loud applause. The night also featured contests with both teams and ended with a brief fireworks display that celebrated the upcoming season.  The Herald-Times
  • High school football games were played on Oct. 3, 2025 in Bloomington and statewide, and scores varied widely—Bloomington South won 55 to 24 over Columbus North while many other teams posted diverse results. Multiple matchups ended with close contests and large margins as teams competed hard on Friday night.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana football is set to play a sellout final home game against Wisconsin on Nov. 15. Head coach Curt Cignetti's team is 12-0 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington and has achieved eight sold-out games in his two seasons.  Indiana Daily Student
