COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On October 9, community members gathered at the Monroe County Courthouse lawn in Bloomington to honor those who died after experiencing homelessness. Beacon, Inc. hosted the vigil where local leaders called for change—reminding everyone that every life matters.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Bloomington will host more than 20 Halloween events during October including film screenings, trunk or treat outings and pumpkin-themed festivals. Some events start today and continue through Halloween—tickets range from $5 to free at venues like IU Cinema and local community spaces.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University’s Crimson Cupboard— which has operated at Campus View Apartments for a decade and opened a second spot in the Indiana Memorial Union two years ago— served over 7,000 students last year and will soon add more frozen and refrigerated foods to meet strong demand. The pantry helps many Hoosiers, including more than 60% graduate students, get the food they need while pursuing their studies.  WRTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Urban forestry experts from Indianapolis and Bloomington held a screening of the film City of Trees and a panel discussion at IU Cinema on Tuesday. They said that involving local residents is key to stopping vandalism of new tree plantings—CanopyBloomington will host a tree planting event in the Waterman neighborhood on Oct. 18th.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Indiana field hockey lost 4 to 0 at Deborah Tobias Field to No. 14 Rutgers while recording only four shots on goal. The loss left the team winless in three games & they will play Miami University in their last nonconference match on Monday at noon.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington North won a close football game against Columbus North 31-28 on Friday, Oct. 10, with sophomore Blake Davis scoring the game-winning touchdown after a blocked field goal in the final minute (the win helps secure a four-game winning streak).  The Herald-Times
  • Freshman volleyball player Jaidyn Jager led Indiana to a three-set win over Michigan at Cliff Keen Arena on Friday night with 15 kills, seven digs, and a .440 hitting percentage—her score sparked a key run that helped the team hold its lead despite early challenges. Indiana, now 14-1 and ranked 20th in the AVCA, will face Michigan State at 1 p.m. Sunday in East Lansing as they aim to build on their strong conference play.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football will face Oregon today at Autzen Stadium (starting at 3:30 p.m.) as the No. 7 Hoosiers plan to boost playoff chances with key plays from quarterback Fernando Mendoza and linebacker D'Angelo Ponds. Coaches say the team sticks to its usual travel routine and game plan while preparing to challenge a ranked Oregon squad (noted for its strong offense).  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana women’s soccer defended its home field at Bill Armstrong Stadium with a 2-1 win over Northwestern on Thursday—securing its first Big Ten win of the season; the team now builds momentum as it prepares for a road trip with a match against Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday.  Indiana Daily Student
