CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater hosts a free Latin jazz show from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and free live music continues this week at the Vault Pub on Thursday and Friday as well as during Food Truck Friday at Switchyard Park from 5 to 8 p.m. Ticketed adults-only concerts—by Tortilla Jackson on Thursday at the Blockhouse Bar and by Junior Brown on Sunday at The Bluebird—add a mix of funk, country and rock to round out the week.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington Book Festival will take place from Oct 24 to Oct 26 across several local venues and will feature best-selling authors such as John Green, Michael Koryta, and William Kent Krueger. The three-day event—featuring panels including a true crime session on the Delphi murders with Aine Cain and Kevin Greenlee, as well as children’s events, a book swap, and a vendor expo—offers local readers a wide range of activities.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington Public Works warned that if residents do not rake their fall leaves into containers for curbside pickup, storm drains may clog and cause flooding and icy sidewalks this winter. The city collects yard waste every other week from April to November and weekly in November and December — residents can also use leaves for mulch or compost to help improve their gardens.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington demonstrators gathered at Courthouse Square for a 'No Kings' protest aimed at ending chaos, corruption and cruelty; local activist group 50501 organized the peaceful rally where about 1,300 people marched, listened to speakers and enjoyed musical performances. The event joined over 2,600 demonstrations across the country — showing that many citizens are uniting to oppose government policies.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • In Bedford on Oct. 18, the Bloomington North boys dominated the sectional by taking the top seven spots for a sixth straight title—setting them up to face Columbus North in the Evansville Regional next Saturday. The Bloomington South girls won their fourth consecutive title while Eastern Greene teams advanced to regionals.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana women's soccer won 2-1 over Penn State as Bella Haggerty and Paige Droner scored, marking the team's first regular season home win against the Nittany Lions in 29 years (the defense allowed only six shots on goal). They keep their postseason dreams alive and will face Iowa next Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana field hockey defeated Penn State by a score of 3 to 1 on Sunday as a strong second-half defense limited scoring while goalkeeper Sadie Canelli recorded five saves. The win (improving their Big Ten record to 2 to 3) sets up upcoming games against Ohio State Friday and Michigan State Sunday.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football receivers Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt combined for 185 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as the No. 3 Hoosiers beat Michigan State 38-13. Coach Curt Cignetti said having two top receivers makes the offense hard to defend—an advantage that may help them break single-season receiving records.  The Herald-Times
  • No. 22 Indiana volleyball snapped its two-game home losing skid by defeating Ohio State 3 to 1 at Wilkinson Hall on Sunday afternoon. The win improved the Hoosiers' record to 15 to 3 overall and 6 to 2 in Big Ten play as they prepare to face No. 18 Minnesota on Oct. 24.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Columnist John Adams’ Big Ten/SEC top 25 poll ranks Indiana and Ohio State as the top football teams; Indiana just signed coach Curt Cignetti to an 8-year contract averaging $11.6 million a year while Ohio State won 34-0 over Wisconsin. The poll also notes that teams like Alabama, Oregon and Vanderbilt showed strong performances and challenges in recent games — details that set the stage for upcoming matchups.  The Herald-Times
