COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Indiana University's Kelley School of Business students partnered with Habitat for Humanity and Whirlpool to build an affordable home in Bloomington for Onga Masumbuko and Emmanuel Ngongo Kanamuli, two residents who fled conflict in Burundi. On Oct. 17, 25 students worked on the build in the Osage Place neighborhood, where additional affordable units are planned.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, as Halloween nears, Bloomington hosts live music events starting with the 14th annual fall show by Expressive Arts Training at Buskirk-Chumley Theater Monday at 7 p.m. and Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country performance at The Bluebird Tuesday at 8 p.m. for ages 21 and up—additional acts include free jazz at the Indiana Memorial Union Thursday, live sets and a Halloween cover show Friday, plus anniversary concerts Saturday at Auer Hall and The Bluebird.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Monroe County History Center has an exhibit called 'Violeta: An Immigration Story' that tells the journey of Violeta McKee, a Filipino immigrant who came alone to the U.S. in 1962 using personal documents organized by her daughter. The exhibit is at 202 E. Sixth St. through February (Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and charges admission (adult $2, children $1, free for kids 5 and under).  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former IU Media School director Jim Rodenbush was fired on Oct 14 for refusing to censor the student newspaper and now plans to sue IU for wrongful termination (he cited the 1969 IDS charter). Faculty and alumni have criticized the decision as censorship while IU established a task force on IDS independence on Oct 20.  The B Square Bulletin

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The B Square reported Monroe County property transfers from October 9 to October 22 using Beacon—the county's online parcel system. Sales ranged from $0 to $1,500,000 as local buyers and sellers completed the transactions.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana field hockey defeated Michigan State 6—1 on Sunday and clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament Nov.6—9 at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington. The win extended their win streak to four games and improved their conference record to 4—3.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana basketball won a 76-74 exhibition game against Baylor Sunday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse when guard Tayton Conerway scored a go-ahead layup with eight seconds left — Coach Darian DeVries used a seven-man rotation after four starters were sidelined, and the team will open its regular season on Nov. 5 against Alabama A&M at Assembly Hall.  The Herald-Times
  • No. 23 Indiana volleyball bounced back with a sweep win over Northwestern at Wilkinson Hall as the team overcame a slow start by scoring early points and maintaining momentum throughout the match—senior players led key plays and head coach Steve Aird credited an intense practice for the turnaround. The win marked Indiana’s 16th victory this season and set the stage for upcoming road games in the Big Ten.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana men's basketball beat Baylor 76-74 in its final exhibition match on Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Lamar Wilkerson scored 28 points and gave four assists as the team overcame an early deficit and will next play Alabama A&M on Nov. 5 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana women's soccer lost 2-0 to Iowa at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Oct. 26th. Sophomore midfielder Maggie Ledwith, who has five goals this season, and freshman defender Grace Hamm, who took 17 shots, had notable plays as the team struggled to score.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football earned 11 No. 1 votes in the AP poll with redshirt junior quarterback Fernando Mendoza leading six touchdown drives and wide receiver E.J. Williams Jr. catching key passes—yet the team remains ranked No. 2 as it prepares to face Maryland on Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana beat UCLA 56—6 on Oct. 25 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Redshirt senior E.J. Williams Jr. caught five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns and linebacker Aiden Fisher scored a touchdown after an interception as coach Curt Cignetti led the win.  Indiana Daily Student
