COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local churches and shelters in Bloomington are hosting donation drives and volunteer events to support roughly 300 homeless people as winter approaches. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two IU deans debated whether technology—including AI, surveillance, social media and satellites—helped or hurt world peace at an event Tuesday at Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies with about 90 attendees. Student leaders moderated the debate and served a buffet dinner before the session served as a test run for future faculty debates.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Media School faculty at IU sent an open letter to students, expressing outrage over the cancellation of the Homecoming issue and other print editions of the student newspaper—claiming that administrators made decisions without proper discussion. The 48-signature letter, updated with two additional names, vows to keep fighting for free and open expression in the classroom.  Indiana Daily Student
  • At Tuesday's meeting on Oct. 28, the Monroe County Community School Corporation presented a tentative labor agreement for 2025-2027 and approved a 2026 budget that will spend $181,004,367—about $6.7 million less than the previous year. Ratification is expected in about three weeks (Nov. 18) and the agreement includes a one-time teacher stipend, increased parental leave, and lower retirement benefits.  The B Square Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits will not be distributed in November because of the government shutdown, leaving 7,697 Monroe County residents to rely on food banks for help. Local food banks and the Bloomington Township Trustee are preparing for a surge in visits + Hoosier Hills Food Bank plans to spend nearly a quarter-million dollars on food supplies to ease the impact.  Indiana Daily Student
  • On Tuesday the city hosted a public meeting at City Hall to collect views on two design proposals for the College and Walnut corridor from State Road 45/46 Bypass to Allen Street. City staff will hold outreach events from Oct. 29 to Nov. 4 — and a follow-up meeting is scheduled today at 5:30 p.m. to discuss traffic, parking, and safety improvements.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana safety Devan Boykin intercepted a pass during the Hoosiers’ 56-6 win over UCLA on Oct. 25, marking his first Indiana interception. Coach Curt Cignetti named him defensive player of the game—Boykin also tied for second on the team with seven tackles as he helped strengthen the secondary.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana men’s basketball redshirt senior forward Tucker DeVries earned a spot on the Julius Erving Award preseason watchlist as announced Wednesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He joined his father’s team in Bloomington for his final season after a season-ending shoulder surgery at West Virginia and twice earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year honors at Drake.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Former Indiana men’s soccer forward Sam Sarver was named the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro MVP presented by adidas on Wednesday—after a season where he captained North Texas SC and broke the club record with 19 goals—and he was drafted 41st overall by FC Dallas following a four-year career with the Hoosiers that saw him score 24 goals and record 22 assists.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Coach Darian DeVries’ new Indiana team played five preseason games that showed both a strong offense and struggles with defense and rebounding as it prepares for its season opener on Nov. 5 against Alabama A&M in Bloomington (the team aims to improve by healing injured players and learning from tough matchups).  The Herald-Times
