COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longtime activist Charlotte Zietlow, whose name is on the Monroe County Justice Building—reportedly passed away at 91 on Nov. 5 as social media posts shared the news, and local officials, including the mayor, recalled her honest advice and lasting impact on the community.  The Bloomingtonian
  • Bloomington residents will attend the free Sing for Joy concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 6 p.m. on Nov. 12—featuring uplifting music under the theme A Sea of Voices and family-friendly fun.  The Bloomingtonian

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Some local restaurants are changing their hours: Porthole Inn closed on Nov. 2 and Arepa Burger’s food truck is not serving now, while Le Petit Cafe will serve French food on Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, Bruster's will serve ice cream until Nov. 23, and Culver's will add cheese & mac until Dec. 28—mixing closures with new offers. Earlier, Aver's Pizza got second place in a national pepperoni contest and Bedford Hardee's cook Clint Adkins won the National Biscuit Baker Competition after finishing radiation treatment.  The Herald-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indiana University Auditorium is hosting Jacobs Live at the Movies—where The Wizard of Oz is shown with live music by the IU Symphony Orchestra—on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Free pre-show talks—led by Larry Groupe and Kirby Hagland—will offer insights into the film's score.  The Herald-Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An Indiana University economist said that job cuts at the school have hurt local wages and the Bloomington economy while private businesses in logistics and tourism are growing. Phil Powell explained that the loss of high-paying jobs may push the local unemployment rate to about 5% next year — and private companies will need to keep up the momentum to help the community recover.  The Herald-Times
  • At IU’s Futurecast Economic Outlook event at Ivy Tech, economist Phil Powell said wages in Bloomington fell 6.2% over the past year because of IU job cuts, placing the area near the bottom in the state. He noted that local small businesses and the new Trades District— a hub for creative ideas— will help boost the local economy going forward.  The B Square Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Media School Dean David Tolchinsky announced the formation of an 18 person task force on editorial independence and sustainability for student media following the firing of Director Jim Rodenbush on Oct. 14. The group—co-led by IU professor Elaine Monaghan and alumnus Raju Narisetti and including faculty, staff, and student leaders—will deliver recommendations in Spring 2026.  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Parts of East Kirkwood Avenue that had been closed for outdoor dining will reopen to vehicles on November 10, with the western portion of the 100 block and the 400 and 500 blocks resuming traffic while the 200 block stays open for alley parking; city officials say the change moves from pandemic measures to a plan that supports local commerce and community engagement.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana men’s basketball won 98—51 over Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Wednesday night. Coach Darian DeVries said the team used a balanced offense—Reed Bailey led with 21 points while Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries contributed key plays—to start the season strong.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries was named the 31st head coach in March after a lifelong journey that started in rural Iowa (where he honed his skills on a homemade court built with family help). He now leads the team at Assembly Hall with deep ties to his early roots (a journey that shaped his passion for the game).  The Herald-Times
  • In their season opener, Indiana women’s basketball beat Lipscomb University 80–46 on Tuesday night—showing the team’s fresh energy after changes in its lineup. Sophomore forward Zania Socka-Nguemen, a transfer from UCLA, scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds—her strong performance hinting at a promising start for the season.  Indiana Daily Student
