COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local restaurants will honor active-duty and retired military on Tuesday, Nov. 11 with free meals and special discounts to mark Veterans Day—offers include free entrees, breakfast combos, and drinks with valid military ID required.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana hunters can donate deer from their fall hunts to support the Hunt for Hunger program — which turns field-dressed game into meat packages for food pantries. Run by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and partnered with local non-profits, the program accepts donations during deer season to help feed residents in need.  The Herald-Times
  • The Indiana University surplus store offers discounted campus items including computers, marching band uniforms, and football cleats—proceeds benefit IU programs. The shop, located on Discovery Parkway north of State Road 45, is open weekdays from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  WRTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hawaiian Hoosier Snacks and Gifts in Ellettsville won the Chamber Award of Excellence small business honor at the Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Oct 28. CEO Stacie Marotta runs the restaurant that serves Hawaiian snack foods and full-service plates—bringing new food choices to town and planning to add outdoor seating next summer.  Indiana Daily Student

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jessica Adams, an IU School of Social Work lecturer, said she was removed from her Diversity, Human Rights and Social Justice class after a student complained about a lesson that discussed white supremacy using a graphic with phrases like Make America Great Again and Columbus Day. She said her departure negatively affected her students as classes were switched to guest lecturers and the administration has yet to offer a clear resolution.  Indiana Daily Student
  • James D. Watson, an Indiana University alumnus and co-discoverer of DNA's double helix, died Thursday at a hospice center in East Northport, New York. His work (with Francis Crick using Rosalind Franklin's images) led to modern genetics breakthroughs (including the Human Genome Project).  Indiana Daily Student

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local food pantries in Monroe County brace for a surge in demand if SNAP benefits are cut, and food bank officials say extra funding from private donors + city support may not cover the growing need. City council and county leaders will meet November 9 at the Monroe County Public Library to plan further assistance for those facing food insecurity.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bloomington North and Bloomington South are battling today in the IHSAA Class 5A Sectional final at 7 p.m., and the Panthers lead 14-0 in the second quarter at 10:14+ the Panthers look for a fifth straight title while the Cougars try for their first win since 2013.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana volleyball beat Iowa in a five-set match Friday night at Wilkinson Hall as senior Candela Alonso-Corcelles turned the game around with a service ace and kill in consecutive plays—she ended with 24 kills and 11 digs.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Shay Ciezki led Indiana’s women’s basketball to a 72-56 win after the team overcame a 34-27 halftime deficit against UIC by scoring 35 points—25 of which came in the second half. Head coach Teri Moren praised her decisive play as the team responded to its first real test this season.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football is set to play Penn State at Beaver Stadium today — a win would boost the Hoosiers to 10-0 and strengthen their Big Ten Championship run. Penn State, now led by interim head coach Terry Smith and a new starting quarterback, will try to bounce back after recent losses.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington South girls basketball team is preparing for a challenging season as head coach Larry Winters said the Panthers have a bullseye on them and must step up after losing two key players, while four returning starters—including H-T Player of the Year Julia Lashley—and new talent like junior transfer Tatum DeVries are bolstering their lineup. The team is focused on building strength during preseason to face a tougher schedule against top regional opponents — aiming to build on last season’s strong run.  The Herald-Times
