COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local food security organizations met Sunday at Monroe County Public Library to discuss hunger and help for residents affected by SNAP cuts while also celebrating Eddy Riou's birthday from South Central Community Action Program. City officials and panelists talked about challenges with accessing food and highlighted a $46,000 donation to support local food banks.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Bloomington is inviting residents to volunteer in programs that help local neighbors—opportunities include working at Opportunity House Thrift Store on flexible donation shifts, clearing snow for those with disabilities through the Snow Buddies program, instructing the Cry of the Children step team, and donating essential items to New Hope for Families to support families facing homelessness.  The Herald-Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Family and friends of María Florinda Ríos Pérez, a 32-year-old cleaning worker who was shot outside a Whitestown home, held a vigil on the steps of the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office to demand justice — her husband Mauricio Velásquez and others honored her memory — as investigators review the evidence while ALMA will host a resource drive on Nov. 23.  WTHR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Monroe County’s private sector showed resilience despite a 6.2% drop in wages from August 2024 to August 2025—figures reported by the Indiana Business Research Center. Local leaders launched Blueprint for the BOLD to attract high-growth industries such as aerospace, defense, and life sciences—building on the Bloomington Economic Development Center’s record of over 900 jobs and $1 billion in capital since 2020.  The Herald-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In Indiana, hikers and fishers in state forests and recreation areas must wear hunter orange during deer firearms hunting season from November 15 to November 30—muzzleloader season starts on December 6.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun announced that eligible Hoosiers will begin receiving partial SNAP benefits today after a government shutdown delayed allotments since Nov. 5. Four thousand households near the income limit are excluded from the partial benefits—state officials plan to restore full funding as soon as a deal is reached.  The Herald-Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A guest columnist from IU said that on November 1, 42 million Americans missed their SNAP benefits—leaving 7,697 Monroe County residents and hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers without support—and warned that the funding shortfall deepens food insecurity as Thanksgiving nears. The column urged Bloomington residents to call representatives, volunteer, or donate time to help ensure all families have food.  Indiana Daily Student

SPORTS NEWS

  • The IU Health Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll is open for readers to vote for top performers from games played from Nov. 3 to Nov. 8 until Nov. 13 at noon—last week's winner, North running back Carter Matthew, received 2,114 votes and 63.3% support. This week, nominees include athletes from North, South, Eastern Greene and Owen Valley.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana women's basketball guard Shay Ciezki was named Big Ten Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points and making key 3-point shots in the season-opening win over Lipscomb — her strong performance earned her the first conference honor of her college career.   • Tucker DeVries averaged 22.5 points in his first two games and earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week—he scored 27 points on Sunday against the Golden Eagles; he will play Milwaukee at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football will celebrate Senior Day at Saturday's game against Wisconsin as the team honors 28 players in their final season of eligibility. Coach Curt Cignetti said the squad is on a mission as they maintain their undefeated season and prepare for a Big Ten Championship appearance.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana defeated Marquette at the United Center in Chicago on November 9th. Fifth-year senior guard Lamar Wilkerson scored 23 points and freshman Trent Sisley added 15 points—head coach Darian DeVries said Indiana outscored Marquette in both halves.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana wrestling started its season on Nov. 8-9 when the team competed in three events and crowned multiple champions at the Michigan State Open, Journeymen’s Wranglemania, and the Collegiate Classic—building momentum for the season—while they prepare for a dual with Columbia University at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 in Elletsville.  Indiana Daily Student
