EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Indiana University placed Beta Theta Pi on cease and desist for alleged hazing after a report was filed on Dec. 5 by the Office of Student Life. The university continues its review amid prior disciplinary sanctions against the fraternity (which included social event suspensions earlier this year).  Indiana Daily Student
  • Kurt Ribisl will serve as the new dean of IU School of Public Health — he begins on March 1, 2026 — replacing interim dean Suresh Viswanathan.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Today, IU President Pamela Whitten in an address in Indianapolis detailed booming enrollment growth at Bloomington and online, a summer 2026 launch for a new D.C. campus, over $1B in research spending, and a Big 10 championship win — signs that strategic investments are fueling the university’s long-term progress.  The Herald-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County officials postponed the eviction of a homeless camp on the former RCA/Thomson property near South Rogers Street until next week after community advocates asked for extra time to help residents secure shelter in the cold.  The Herald-Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Bloomington Severe Winter Emergency Shelter will open Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Friday at First United Methodist Church, and over the weekend at a to-be-determined location as organizers seek volunteers to support those in need during Arctic temperatures.  The Herald-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza suffered a turf burn at Lucas Oil Stadium during a 13—10 Big Ten title game win over Ohio State and wore a long sleeve Tuesday to cover the injury. The Heisman finalist will use IU’s bye to rest and recover ahead of the playoffs.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana men's basketball ended a two-game losing streak with a 113-72 win over Penn State yesterday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Lamar Wilkerson broke school records with 44 points and 10 three-pointers (his historic performance helped spark the win), and the team will face Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana football set a record when the Hoosiers beat Ohio State 13-10 in the Big Ten championship game on Dec. 9 (the game averaged 18.3 million viewers and peaked near 20 million), according to Fox Sports, and the viewership could affect how the conference shares TV revenue in the future.  The Herald-Times
