CULTURE NEWS

  • Constellation Stage and Screen presents A Christmas Story: The Musical, running through Jan. 4 at the John Waldron Arts Center. The holiday production, which opened Dec. 11, features music by Pasek and Paul and includes a holiday market (with a food drive) that boosts local festivities.  Indiana Daily Student
  • IU will soon display a new statue honoring Ryan White, created by sculptor Melanie Pennington who compared images of Ryan White with her work to ensure it reflects true life.  The Herald-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Finance major Shreyansh Gala will speak at the IU Bloomington Winter Commencement at 11 a.m. Dec. 19 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, where he will share key lessons from his transformative campus experience — including the importance of not letting others’ opinions define him.  Indiana University
  • An Indiana delegation led by The International Center in Indianapolis and the Indiana-Germanic Business Council went to Berlin on the IU Europe Gateway’s 10th anniversary to strengthen economic, civic, and academic ties for state growth, while several German firms plan to visit Indiana later this month.  Indiana University

  • Bloomington has expanded free public Wi-Fi to Seminary Park (100 W. 2nd St.) and Hopewell Commons (630 S. Morton St.), offering speeds up to 100 Mbps. The initiative supports the Digital Opportunity Strategic Plan to boost digital access for all residents.  City of Bloomington

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local readers can vote in the IU Health Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll for Dec. 8 — 13 featuring nominees from South, Edgewood and Lighthouse; last week, the Owen Valley girls wrestling team earned 50% of votes. Voting ends Thursday, Dec. 18 at noon.  The Herald-Times
  • Fifth-year senior guard Lamar Wilkerson earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday after scoring a record 44 points (including 10 three-pointers) in 24 minutes against the Nittany Lions on Dec. 11 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.   • Former Notre Dame center Pat Coogan, now playing for Indiana, helped lead a group of teammates in cheering for Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza during a Saturday evening event at the Playwright Ballroom.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana football head coach Curt Cignetti was named American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year for the second straight season after guiding the Hoosiers to a 12–0 record and a Big Ten Championship game win over Ohio State on Dec. 6 (the first coach to win back-to-back since 1935).  Indiana Daily Student
  • Indiana women’s basketball sophomore guard Valentyna Kadlecova announced Monday that she will return to the Czech Republic to play professional basketball; the Hoosiers will prepare to face Western Carolina University at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Dec. 21.  Indiana Daily Student
  • After wins over ULM on Dec. 11 and Eastern Michigan on Sunday, senior guard Shay Ciezki earned Big Ten Player of the Week and freshman Maya Makalusky received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors — both helping boost the Hoosiers, who will meet Western Carolina at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Beloved youth sports official Jeff Tamarri (Jeff the Ref) passed away Friday night at a girls basketball game at Monrovia High School; he spent 30 years inspiring local athletes across central Indiana and is remembered for his calm and dedicated officiating.  WTHR
