COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local attorney Ken Nunn donated 40 bicycles and helmets to children at Crestmont Boys & Girls Club on Thursday, Dec. 18 — supported by retired firefighter Lee Chapman and discounted pricing from Walmart. The event marked his 15th year of gifting bikes to kids from Bloomington and Ellettsville Boys & Girls Clubs.  The Bloomingtonian
  • After federal funding cuts reduced its CPB allocation (about 25 percent of its budget), WFHB Community Radio in Bloomington let go of two staff and reevaluated its programming, causing news director Kade Young and remaining team members to take on expanded roles amid an uncertain future supported by strong community donations.  Indiana Daily Student

  • The Bloomingtonian is seeking 5 to 9 local sponsors at $500 each for on-location coverage of Indiana football's College Football Playoff, starting with the Rose Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 1.   • NPR’s news quiz 'Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!' will record live at IU Auditorium on Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. — ticket prices range from about $30 to $143 as fans prepare for a night of looking at the week’s news through comedy.  The Herald-Times
  • A sculpture honoring Ryan White will be installed at the Indiana Memorial Union next spring following a Dec. 6 presentation by IU sculpture lecturer Melanie Cooper Pennington (who spent six months researching his life) that detailed his role in changing views on HIV education.  The B Square Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monroe County Community School Corp cut extra pay for over 200 Title I teachers, lowering the amount from $2,000 to $1,000 for 2025-2026 and planning to end it next year as the board adjusts for lower enrollment and tax revenue (some board members expressed regret during the Dec. 16 meeting).  The Herald-Times
  • At Tuesday’s board meeting, MCCSC superintendent Markay Winston said that closures and delays earlier this month due to severe winter weather were set after checking forecasts, road conditions, and legal requirements (with input from meteorologists and law enforcement). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city council voted Wednesday to designate the Ivan Adams House — 115 E. 12th St. — as a single-property historic district because it was the home of noted limestone sculptor Ivan Adams from 1927 to 1945.  The B Square Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana football signed offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan to a new three-year deal ahead of the Rose Bowl. The undisclosed contract follows a recent raise and comes as the team celebrates its top seed and its first Big Ten title since 1967.  The Herald-Times
  • Indiana football extended offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan's contract through 2026 to secure continuity under head coach Curt Cignetti, following his move from James Madison. He helped the offense score 41.3 points per game last season, supporting the program's stability for the future.  Indiana Daily Student
  • Andrew Franklin and his family will travel to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day to honor a tradition when his parents attended the game. He will wear his grandfather's engraved watch as the Hoosiers, led by Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, play after earning the No. 1 seed.  WTHR
