- ➤ Unemployment claims in Indiana increased last week as new jobless claims reached 2,596 for the week ending August 9 compared with 2,550 the previous week — while national claims dropped to 224,000. The Herald-Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Indiana University Bloomington is leading an expanded research center that examines individual nanocrystals and has received $20 million Phase 2 funding from the National Science Foundation to unite scientists from nine institutions. The center studies these tiny particles for cleaner fuels, faster electronics, and better chemical manufacturing—while engaging the local community by partnering with an artist to create a mural near WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bloomington faces a smaller 2026 budget as the new property tax cap law is set to reduce revenue from $58 million to $54 million, and city controller Jessica McLellan said departments made sharp cuts to reach a proposal with $147 million in expenses against $120 million in revenue. City leaders will review the proposed budget at council meetings next week — a move aimed at addressing the budget gap and planning for future challenges. WRTV
